What other songs should be banned because of the WTC?

Here’s a list of songs ClearChannel Communiscations has reccomended not be played by it’s radio stations in wake of the tragedy:

"War Pigs," Black Sabbath
“Jetairliner,” Steve Miller
“Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” Pat Benatar
“It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine),” REM
“Run Like Hell,” Pink Floyd
“Walk Like an Egyptian,” Bangles
“Dust in the Wind,” Kansas
“Only the Good Die Young,” Billy Joel
“Eve of Destruction,” Barry McGuire
“Johnny Angel,” Shelly Fabares
“I Go to Pieces,” Peter and Gordon
“Great Balls of Fire,” Jerry Lee Lewis
“Leavin’ on a Jet Plane,” Peter, Paul and Mary
“Morning Has Broken,” Cat Stevens
“I Feel the Earth Move,” Carole King
“American Pie,” Don McLean
“Learn to Fly,” Foo Fighters
“Wipeout,” Safaris
“New York, New York,” Frank Sinatra
“Free Fallin’,” Tom Petty
“Have You Seen Her?” Chi-Lites
“We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” Animals
“Brain Stew,” Green Day
All songs by Rage Against the Machine

There’s others, like “Jump” by Van Halen that are off this dopey list.

I don’t think ClearChannel is going far enough. How about (and forgive me for butchering these titles):

“Walls Came a Tumblin’” John Mellancamp

“Shake Your Foundations” AC/DC

“Skypilot” The Animals

“Miss You” Rolling Stones

“Cuts Like a Knife” Bryan Adams

“The End” The Doors

“Creeping Death” Metallica

“Fast Train” The Box Tops

“New York Minute” The Eagles

“I Have a Contract Out on You” Judas Priest

“The Roof is On Fire”

“The Unforgettable Fire” U2

What do you mean by “other”? Even these shouldn’t be banned.

I agree with leiu. What simple-minded fool would be offended by “Walk Like an Egyptian”? Besides a music critic, I mean.

Seriously, I just looked up the lyrics to the song, and what on Earth could have any bearing on the WTC tragedy? Is Clearchannel actually somehow equating Egyptians and terrorists?

The now obligatory message that Clear Channel didn’t ban any songs. According to Snopes, “Clear Channel did not issue the list to their stations with a directive that the listed songs not be played, nor did they even request that their stations refrain from playing the listed songs…”

I don’t agree with banning either, but if I were a DJ I wouldn’t play the Cure’s “Killing An Arab” any time soon …

In fact, why don’t we remove the words fire, war, building, plane etc etc (you get the idea) from the english language? I understand the sensitivity of the situation but how far can we really take it? Should we edit old movies and shows that mention WTC? Should we take Apocalypse now off the shelves?

I’m not flaming you or anyone else, so I apologize in advance if it seems that way. I think the events of the last week are absolutely horrible. I am not sure that censoring music that is not even related to these events or even violent in nature (WIPEOUT!?!?!?) will solve anything.

Some of the songs that are typically non-offensive were suggested as non-play recordings because they’re so bouncy and fun, which is discongruous with national tragedy.

They’re simply looking out for their audience’s feelings, folks.

That’s weird, I’ve heard “American Pie” quite a few times on our classic rock station since the WTC incident. I thought of it as a song that was sort of unifying…many people know and like it. And I heard a lot of Metallica Tuesday and Wednesday, don’t remember if any of them would be deemed offensive. Anyway, I don’t really believe in banning songs, and most of these songs really don’t have anything to do with what specifically happened, and again, according to another thread, no songs have actually been banned.

“American Pie” ?!?!?!?!?

You mean the song named after…

a plane that crashed?

Sure. Ban all those songs. :open_mouth:

Then start pyres with movies…DVD’s…and…:: gasp :: BOOKS!

I think the insesitive would play some of those songs…and I seriously doubt any radio station would actually admit to any list like that. IIRC it was attributed to ClearChannel??

Kim

You left out the song that was listed first in all reports I read:

Imagine by John Lennon

I fail to see why songs like Morning Has Broken or Dust in the Wind would be offensive. After all, we really ARE only dust in the wind, and if morning does break, that is a good thing, really.

On Wednesday morning, the classic rock station I usually listen to was playing War Pigs when I turned on the radio first thing! I thought it was highly appropriate, actually.

Umm, didn’t anyone click on the snopes link? It’s not true so you really don’t have anything to get riled up about.

Again -

IT’S NOT TRUE!

Diane, how can you waste your time clicking on links when songs are being banned?

Humm - the local radio station here actually made up a tribute/memorial type thing with Imagine. It was kinda nice actually. (Well, nice is the wrong word.)

They may have overplayed it a tad though. (Every 30 minutes or so.)

Al.

I fail to see that anybody has suggested, and this includes the OP, that these songs were actually “Banned” (other than the thread title). The Snopes link made it clear that this list is a list of suggested songs. Vinnie Virginslayer was just tring to get a list together of songs that might bring to mind this trajedy and thus qualify for the list.

I, for one, think that Jim Croce’s “Don’t mess around with Jim” should be the new national anthem. At least for the next couple of months.

I think Morning Has Broken would be “offensive” because the most radio-popular version was done by Cat Stevens, who is a Muslim.

I think Vinnie was just pulling our legs, frankly.

But I highly recommend no one play anything by the Smiths for a few weeks. Or Depeche Mode. The world is depressed enough as it is.

LateComer, remember, we’re fighting ignorance here. this:

isn’t supported by reality.

I couldn’t help myself, I had to check to see if they had finally banned that Lee Greenwood song that has been playing over and over in my head from hearing it 9,000 times in the last week.

IT’S NOT THERE!

They need to ban it just for the sake of my sanity!

Since the OP was in jest, I have a couple of songs:

“Burning Down the House” and “Fire Water Burn (the roof is on fire).”

I know there are others, but those are the only two I can think of at the moment :stuck_out_tongue:
