What parts would you protect with body armor?

Suppose you’re going into battle on foot, against unknown foes, and you can cover 50% of your surface area with armor. Which parts do you cover? What if you can only cover 25%?

I was faintly relieved for my characters in Rainbow Six to see that I could give them body armour that covered the groin. Shame that so many of them died in friendly fire incidents, but then they weren’t from groin injuries.

Head, torso and groin. I’d prefer one leg to no balls.

Can I put a double coat on Big Jim and the Twins?

No.

I would definitely want to protect the family jewels, but losing a leg might mean getting stranded and dying. Big Jim’s not much use if you’re dead.

For 50% coverage, I’d go for:
Head neck, shoulders, front of torso, groin, and front of calves (hands and forearms if there’s any spare in that allowance, and if effective armour exists for them)

25% would be:
head, neck, whole groin, breastplate (of some sort).

If I wanted to be really, really clever, I’d specify total body armour, manufactured from a 50 or 75% open mesh - very small gauge and of sufficiently magical strength to function as solid material. Hah!

Head & cervical vertebrae, throat, kidneys & small of back, elbows, knees, groin. That’s your 25%. Add front of chest & belly, hands & forearms and front of thighs for 50%. Standard SCA minimum coverage, basically, with some torso & thigh thrown in.

Other 50% option - cover my entire frontage. Real men don’t need to protect their backs!
