Do I have to start a Pit thread to simply ask what is so inflammatory about the name “Eretz-Yisra’el” that it gets someone a Warning on here? Seriously, 100% honest, and assuming that I don’t pay that much attention to the incessant Arab-Israeli conflicts of the last few hundred years (and I don’t), I have no clue as to why these words are Warn-worthy on this message board.
So can someone either explain it to me in the context of keeping it within a “GQ answer” as per forum Rules, or tell me to take it to the Pit?
Note that I specifically did not give an official warning to Operation Ripper for that remark. The reason I mentioned it at all was specifically because of Operation Ripper’s habit of making drive-by contentless posts merely to stir up trouble. The post had no real bearing on the OP. The use of Eretz-Israel vs Palestine is in part a political issue, and potentially could lead to a debate that I would prefer to keep out of this particular thread. In my opinion, based on past behavior, **Operation Ripper ** brought it up for exactly that reason, and so I cautioned him about it.
If my reasons aren’t clear, you are welcome to discuss it further in the Pit, or with me directly by e-mail.
I just wondered if it was particularly inflammatory and if it was something that persons would avoid using in polite conversation (should it come up), but you’re saying instead it was being deliberately provocative in a political debating manner. Fair enough, I have no disagreement or further comment.
For further clarification, I have no objection to anyone using either Israel or or Palestine in this thread with reference to that area, as long as the intention is not to stir up debate as to what the “correct” name for it is. My remarks were directed to **Operation Ripper’s ** behavior rather than the use of the name per se.
Edirne also called Adrianople (northwest of Istanbul) has the distinction of being the most fought over city in the world with 12 major sieges and countless battles near it. If we aren’t being specific, I’d be willing to guess just about any scrap of dirt that has had humans living in tribes for any extended period of time can lay claim to most fought over.
You get better oranges from Israel, that’s how you tell them apart. Although that description can lead into all sorts of political jokery in itself
In the spirit of GQ… the term “Eretz-Yisra’el” means “Greater Israel”, and usually refers to the biblical boundaries of ancient Israel (these boundaries are not represented by current political borders).
Because this area includes certain disputed territories - such as Palestine - it can be used to imply that certain land belongs by right to Israel, with overtones of “one day it’ll be ours again”.
