Any rough estmates on how it works out?
I’d say probably pretty darn close to 100% is either straight, gay, or bisexual…
You’re forgetting the asexuals. But they’re not very exciiiting.
Hey, don’t leave out the asexuals.
Sorry. Include them, too.
Ok, now for a serious reply.
A quick Yahoo/Google search said that 10% of the American adult male population is homosexual… maybe. There were just as many sites (mostly fundamentalist Christian yahoos) claiming that number is way too high.
I don’t think this question can really be answered (especially not on a worldwide scale) until the stigma on homosexuality is removed worldwide. You might be able to find stats on the percentages of out-of-the-closet homosexuals, out-of-the-closet bisexuals, etc…
Since no one has done a worldwide survey on sexuality, using the same questions, the same interview techniques, and the same sampling method, your question can probably never be answered.
So let us stick with one country, the United States, and one gender. A random survey of 700 men by Bagley et al. (1994), produced the following results for male sexuality:
* 4.3% of males (32/750) reported having “regular sex with person(s) of the same sex over 18.”
* 4.9% of males (37/750) reported having “occasional adult gay sex encounters, but are mainly heterosexual.”
* 2.0% of males (14/700) reported themselves to be “interested in having same-sex encounters with adult partners but never tried it.”
It should be noted,
Lest we forget, I once surveyed the SDMB crowd about their sexuality. Here’s the poll and here’s the results and here’s the results in Graph form. (Thanks again, JeffB!)
Jezus christ, those have got to be the WORST figures ever produced! What the hell, are you an economist or something? Because youre definately not a scientist. Care to actually label your axes?
Based on my own experience, and that of other gay men, there’s a **huge ** number of ostensibly straight men out there, who regularly have sex with other men. And the vast majority of them would never admit this in any survey, even to an anonymous computer, out of fear that it would ruin their lives, if it got out.
I have a gut feeling (and sure, this is totally subjective) that if all societal restraints and stigmas were removed, the Kinsey scale would produce a perfectly symmetrical bell curve. But of course I don’t expect this to be proven, or unproven, in my lifetime.
homercles, you’re going to take it up the ass if you fail to examine the graphs without the explanation.
Figuratively speaking, of course.
Homercles…you may want to state your comments in a less judgemental fashion, and you may want to do a bit of reading before you take another poster to task, And you may want to find out a bit more about the person you are criticising. QTM is a very respected poster - for good reason - and his study should be at least read completely before making your comments.
Live and learn.
D’OH!
I’ll remember you.
And now we know how Dr. Giggles git started.
Going back to the OP, one important decision that must be made in calculating such percentages is whether to list transgendered people as falling under their biological sex at birth, or their chosen gender.
Of course, it probably won’t change the averages that much, because as far as I know, transgendered people don’t make up that much of the population.
