On Saturday a friend and I were talking about how neither of us can recall ever hearing about a woman or girl blowing off her own fingers or killing herself outright with fireworks. We wondered if it happens much at all.
Looking for stats, all I came up with was an article that said 70% of firework injuries are to men and boys. However, the statistics weren’t broken out by people who caused their own injuries versus people injured by other people’s mishandling of fireworks. So the 30% being injured who are female obviously includes girls and women who were injured by others, like the teenage girl injured by her neighbor’s fireworks over the weekend.
Based on this report I’d say those stats just do not exist. If they did the CPSC would have gone to the trouble of trying to call people for details. And since they only managed to get complete information from 9 out of over a 100 selected cases their detailed data is not representative either.
On the other hand, this appears to be an annual report, perhaps they have had more success in other years.
The stats I could find are about fireworks injuries – it does not state whether the injury is self-inflicted or the result of another’s carelessness. But the split I have is 71% male and 29% female for injuries observed between June 21 and July 20, 2020. (These results are based on a sample.)
