That’s neat! How did they approach you?
We have a huge gap of empty sky here in the Western Caribbean but I don’t think they have any coverage reporting from Cayman.
There is a link at the top of the page that says " Increase Coverage" Click on that to get info about getting equipment to add to their data feed. Amazingly they sill are looking for more reporting stations in parts of the United States that I assume would be well covered. If it is an area they really want then they will send you the equipment to install.
Unfortunately they don’t say they want more Cayman coverage. ![]()
A similar site is Maritime Traffic. The link should take you to the frankly alarming view of the English Channel ![]()
Wow! So cool!
Boy, you weren’t kidding about the English Channel! Holy Shit!
If I ever needed proof of why I should not be an air traffic controller, this was it.
I was in a panic just looking at all of those planes…the thought of having to keep track and “do stuff” to keep them safe is enough for me to break out into a sweat.
Yeah. If you look around LAX, NYC, Chicago, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc it looks really hairy.
Is there a version of this for cranks that will track the chem-trails over your house?
Wow. There’s a LOT of traffic on the rivers of Europe too.
I was wondering where the traffic on the Great Lakes of North America was, but then I remembered that the Lakes are still mostly frozen over…
I saw message in a radio hobbyist mail list. After I made the first cut, they requested pictures to gauge the sort of view of the horizon I had.
They are keen to have multiple stations in some areas as they increase their MLATcoverage.
I am under a very busy airway on the south coast of Nova Scotia.
I applied. Apparently they have a need for someone in my area. The antenna will be perfect out on my deck.
So I’m guessing they don’t show military planes?
I’m thinking of moving to a city near an AFB, and I thought this site might help me avoid buying a house under a busy flight path. They show lots of planes around the city airport, but nothing around the base.
I live a few miles from Teterboro Airport. So many planes fly over my house I rarely even notice them.
Nothing at the moment, but that is not surprising. While there are certainly planes coming and going at the moment, the big airlines don’t depart until much later this evening.
Probably on an approach vector…
You can also ask Siri what planes are above you at the moment. It’ll give you airline, flight number, altitude, angle, plane type and slant difference - along with a sky map.
Huh. I thought all those planes flying over my house were on Gatwick approach but apparently they’re mostly Heathrow and London City.
Just got to watch some tiny plane toodle around and land at Biggin Hill, which was kind of cool too.
Just what I needed. Something else more interesting than the web conference I am supposed to be participating in!
(Seriously though, this is fascinating, thanks, FoiGrasIsEvil.)
I live in Northern Indiana and I’m roughly equidistant to 8 major airports. There are always planes flying over my house.
I live on the approach path for Cincinnati airport (CVG) which of course is in Northern Kentucky, and I am across the Ohio River from there in SE Indiana. At any given clear moment I can always see a half dozen planes overhead from my deck or front yard.
I used to work under the western approach path for the northern runways at Pearson Airport in Toronto (YYZ). In the afternoon, if the sun angle was just right through the great western windows, plane shadows would pass over our desks.
