what PlayStation 2 game should I buy tonight?

Ive been a frustrated PC gamer for the last 2 years, and what a dry spell its been. The other night I totally cracked and blew like 300 bucks on a PlayStation 2 and what are considered to be 3 of the best games - final fantasy x, metal gear solid 2, and devil may cry. Well, today I got an unexpected paycheck and its blazing a hole in my fire-prone pocket. I NEED to go out and buy another game. Nevermind that I havent even had the chance to get into the games I already have, I just need to buy one more.

What should I buy?

Ive been scouring “best PS2 games of all time” searches on the net and just dont seem to be coming up with anything that interests me.

I did some research on some games - Shinobi looked cool but many said it was repetitive and beyond frustrating. Kingdom Hearts is plagued with Disney characters, and thats a huge put-off to me. Suikoden III sounds good, but I hear the music sucks (Music’s pretty important to me). Wild Arms 3 also looks somewhat intriguing. TimeSplitters and Silent Hill 2 looked neat.

I love games like Super Metroid or Castlevania SOTN, Final Fantasy, the hypnotic action of Devil May Cry (God, I love soaring the air only to smash down on some enemy with my sword - I cant get enough of aerial stuff), Zelda - Ocarina of Time, Secret of Mana, you get my drift.

Please help me! What do I buy? If you’re kind enough to leave a suggestion for me, please briefly tell me what makes it so good and give a comparison to another game, if possible.

Thanks!

Sounds like you need a Gamecube :D.

Go out and buy Grand Theft Auto:Vice City right now.

Best game made in years, bar none.

I thought heavily on getting a GC, but the only game on it that interests me is Metroid…

Thanks for the advice on GTA:VC

Seriously, replay valuewise you won’t get a better deal.

You will screw around for hours, before you even start doing the mission.

As far as fighting games go, try DOA3, pretty good game if you have some friends to beat up.

I hear “SpongeBob SquarePants- Revenge of the Flying Dutchman” is really, really good.* You should buy that one. You should buy several copies, actually.

[SUB]*No, actually, I haven’t. I just spent two years of my life working on that damn game, and I’d like to actually see some royalties on it. The game’s supposed to have turned out quite well, though.[/SUB]

Lightnin’, did you really work on that game? My kids LOVE that show and they want that game so bad but I’m seriously [sub]rent not paid[/sub] broke so I dont think I will be getting it for them for a while.

lukaspriest, I second the nomination for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. If the VERY mature subject matter will not offend you or get you in trouble, it will be very possibly the best $49 you ever spent. I am getting near the end of the game, still having lots of fun, and have put in at least 100 hours of play. And you can fool around for hours and be entertained , without being forced to advance the storyline at all.

I also highly recommend SSX Tricky. It doesn’t seem from your list of games that you are much into sports titles (and neither am I), but Tricky is loads of fun, everyone I know who’s got it, loves it, and it should be $19.99 at most places. But if that’s not your bag, then you’ll know it already.

Er… Vice City is a no brainer. But if it’s too morally bankrupt for you, Tony Hawk 4 has the same sort of open ended play.

Also in heavy rotation for me are Virtua Fighter 4, Sly Cooper (Family Friendly!), and Final Fantasy X

Yes, how is TH4? I’m thinking about picking it up for a friend as a late x-mas present.

I went and dug up some discussion in the IMHO branch of the forums…

From what I read, Kingdom Hearts is truly the shiznit - I’ll just have to get past the disney crap. But Suikoden III too looks luscious…

Ive played GTA3 and I dont know if I’m really up for Vice City…the violence and immorality in it is great, but I got bored hi-jacking cars and killing cops, as impossible as that seems.

If you’re ready for something different from pretty much every game ever made, you could try DDRMAX with a Beat Gear pad. It’s a whole lot of fun, and you’ll be getting a workout. Only about $10 more for the game + pad combo than just one game. I suggest you read up about it before getting it though, it may be a little too different for some…

I’ll second SSX Tricky and I’m not even into the sports-type games. My husband and I have played this for hours and hours. It’s a blast.

I too just bought a PS2 and I got Medal of Honor: Frontline and The Thing and they both are dynamite! MOH is like being there. I’ve played both MOH on PS1 but this one is great. The Thing is top notch. I found it at a K-Mart for 30 bucks! It’s 50 everywhere else I’ve looked.

Ratchet and Clank was a nice little Christmas stocking surprise that turned out to be a very good game. Two heroes that run around the universe trying to stop a midget bad guy from destroying planets using the tried and tested methods of running, jumping, leaping, bashing, shooting, flying, destroying, racing, and finding (amongst a legion of other techniques).

You pick up a range of neat weapons along the way (my personal favourite is the Morph-O-Ray that changes enemies - including tanks! - into chickens). If you’re the race-to-the-end kinda guy, and you actually manage to defeat the final boss without the R.Y.N.O weapon (Rip Ya a New One), you can restart the game with your cache of cash and weapons to try and find all the stuff you missed (plus get all the necessary Skill Points so you can see the real ending).

And if, after all that, you still can’t get enough, you can design and submit your own gadget weapon at the official website. Mind you, I rather like platformers, so you might want to check out various reviews at gamefaqs.com, gamers.com et al to see if it’s the kind of thing you’d like.

See www.ratchetandclankgadgets.com for personal weapon design.

I love GTA: VC as well, but I’ll also throw in a recommendation for SOCOM: US Navy Seals. Cool tactical mission type stuff with a headset you can use to talk to the computer characters! And they talk back!

Kingdom Hearts is the next game I would love to play, I’m currently playing Resident Evil: Veronica’s Code X, which I think is the 4th in the series. I got close to the end, but realize I forgot something so minor, that its caused me to go back and restart the game from the very beginning. The game is hella long, so imagine the agony of having to back and start all over. I’d recommend it to you. If you have a Game Cube, try Resident Evil Zero, which is the prelude to all the Resident Evil games, Resident Evil 4 is suppose to be released on Game Cube too.

The Sims for PS2 is suppose to be released on the 19th of this month (hopefully w/o any delays), another game I would gladly spend 50 bucks on. I enjoyed the whole PC series, I hear the review for it is great and the PS2 version should be better with alot more stuff.

Blasphemy! The music is pretty good in Suikoden III; the worst you could fault it with is that it’s a little bit repetitive. (You hear the same good music over and over again). I’d read the same comment about the music being bad on some review of the game and I have no idea where they got that from – especially since the review I read said it didn’t compare favorably with the music in Suikoden II. Of course, several of the tracks are exactly the same as those in Suikoden II, but the facts never stop some yahoos from writing BS over the internet.

Anyway, the game rocks. Especially, of course, if you like RPG’s. I don’t like it quite as much as Suikoden II, but it’s still one of my favorite games ever. Suikoden III is the first game I’d recommend to anybody looking for a new PS2 game.

If music is a really big deal to you, then I’d go along with the others and recommend GTA Vice City. They licensed genuine 80’s songs for the soundtrack. (Assuming you like 80’s music, of course.)

Then definitely don’t get it. The gameplay itself isn’t that much fun, IMO; the main draw of the game is seeing all the Disney characters show up in bizarre places, like being able to summon Dumbo.

Another YEA! vote for Suikoden III. The music isn’t half-bad, and by the time it gets annoying, you’ve made up lyrics to it anyway. (Going to the store now, going to buy stuff now, going to the store now, going to the STOOOOORE!) (My dogs think I’m weird.)

But the gameplay is awesome, the plot is amazing, the whole thing is addictive. I’ve been buying new games left and right in an effort to keep myself from going back and playing it again until I forget just how cool playing it the first time was. 68 hours it took me to finish it, and that was in one of three game modes, and I didn’t even finish finding all the 108 stars…
Oh, and GTA:VC is cool too.

Devil May Cry 2 is supposed to be out this month, otherwise
Metal Gear Solid 2
Baldur’s Gate:Dark Alliance
Jak and Daxter
James Bond 007…Agent Under Fire
are all great.

Oh great, now that’s going to get stuck in my head every time. Along with “Saaaaaaafe… at hooooooooome… I’m wan-der-ing through my ca-stle, and tal-king…”
