Kind of boring. Someone had been asking about digital cameras (back in 2001 or so when digital cameras were new and fresh) and I had just bought one so had knowledge to share. Nowadays, “recommend me a digital camera” is a perennial and we just ship the asker off to dpreview.com
Still my favorite, and one of the funniest I’ve read here:
I stuck my wedding ring up my nose
Thanks jjimm, for 5 years of laughs.
For me it was the post of posts: What if The Lord of the Rings was written by someone else?
Although not to reply there. I thought that a message board that could create such genius was worth sticking around with.
I found the SDMB though the collumn, which I found online due to a google link about Bloomsday (it was the question about Finegan’s Wake.) I spent some time reading the archives and then figured I would check out the messege board. Frankly, at first I didn’t know what to think. I read it for a while, decided I wanted to ask a question or two and got a guest membership. Sometime durring that membership I read one of those "favorite threads in SDMB history threads and followed a link to how lno’s rage burned with the fire of a million suns.
I joined with a paid membership shortly thereafter.
Scylla’s thread where he waterboarded himself was sent to me in an email forward. I started nosing around the Dope, trying to figure out what kind of group had members willing to experiement on themselves like that, and became hooked. It took me a while to decide to join, but if posting had been free at the time, I would have jumped in sooner.
I finally paid up to comment on this thread: How volatile is Dynamite? - Factual Questions - Straight Dope Message Board
Looks like I got the last word in, too.
 I did not see that thread when it ran, but wow. Just wow!
Earlier I forgot to mention that the posts that originally made me pay (and not just lurk) were mouse_maven’s pregnancy threads. My girlfriend was pregnant at the time, and it was really, really comforting to get a confirmation that she was not going crazy…
I can’t remember, but I read so many posts it probably wasn’t just one. I was going to arbitrarily assume it would be the first one that I posted to, but I tried looking at my post history and it only goes back as far as this September! So no way of knowing now.
As far as I can tell, this is your first post (April 9, 2000). Here’s a link to the thread.
It didn’t make me join but I always remember it.
How did you do that? I tried the “jackdavinci’s posts” method and it would only go back a limited amount for me.
Well if that’s accurate, apparently I was drawn in by the plight of Elian lol. I never would have guessed that.

After all this time, I can’t remember. But probably I looked up Cecil Adams and saw the message board.
I loved a good message board, since being a veteran of the SFRT* on the old GEnie service. That kind of spoiled me, of course – talking and debating with Jerry Pournelle, Daffyd ab Hugh, Greg Feeley, Jane Yolen, Jim Macdonald, Ray Feist, John Ordover, etc. really spoils you for message boards.
But the SDMB was and is quite close to that level of discussion. I probably saw a topic and jumped right in.
*Science Fiction Round Table.
It’s been over a decade, and I don’t remember. If I had to guess, I’d guess it had to do with Superman flying around the globe and achieving time travel.
By Golly, it was Evil Nazi Groundhogs that sucked me in.
Thanks, What.
But this is what made me stay. Enterprise vs. Star Destroyer. Gets good on page five about halfway down.
It wasn’t a thread for me. I read one of Cecil’s columns in a paper. It was “Is it true male pigs have corkscrew shaped penises?”
When the Net took off I got to thinking “I’ll bet there’s a website for Cecil!” and lo and behold, there was. I joined up right away, although I didn’t post much at first.
I was doing online reseach for a book and stumbled upon the dope. Wow that was 7.5 years ago.
Wow.
Oh and I never finished the book.
These are connected aren’t they?

Your welcome carnivorousplant.
I was pretty content just reading (still am, mostly), but decided to join up when I needed to do a search.
