I had been lurking for quite a while, laughing my ass off most of the time. But I didn’t actually join up until I had a question about teeth that I posted in GQ.
I don’t remember the thread anymore but I remember the username. Some guy with the username Satan had said something really funny and insightful which got me to start lurking these boards. I lurked for a year or two and finally decided to join one day. To bad that guy turned into a asshole and got banned.
Wow this thread sure brings back a lot of memories. Does Master Wanker, QED, or Scytila still post here? I’m positive I mangled those usernames.
QED sure does.
I can barely remember last week and you want me to remember 8 years ago?
I can’t remember.
But thanks for the link to the lightbulb/potato debacle - that was SDMB gold! I never read it before.
I was researching the “can a head remain conscious after decapitation” when I stumbled on this board. I was fascinated.
I am not a true member because I am Dutch and really cheap. I was so happy when they made the board free. Also, I find that threads repeat themselves on a 12 month basis. There is only so many questions to ask. It’s OK. It refreshes my memory once a year.
I was browsing in a bookstore and found The Straight Dope book, the first collection. I opened the book, and stumbled across that article. Once I read it, I knew that I had to buy the book. I bought other books as they became available, and one of them had a notice saying that Cecil was on AOL, and the keyword. When AOL went to all-you-can-surf, I signed up specifically for the SD. I lurked on the old message boards for a while, and then started posting. I spent many, many hours on the AOL SD archives…there was a drawing of a brain, with different categories listed as portions of that brain. I kind of wish we had something similar to that now.
I’d been into the Straight Dope books since the mid '80s, and one day when bored at work (some time in '99) it suddenly dawned on me to type straightdope.com into my address bar and see what happened. I ignored the message board for a while until a banner ad on the main page in memory of WallyM7’s passing got me to take a look. I think I registered during one of the “Very Vaguely Creepy” threads, and my first post was on a GQ thread about funeral practices.
I used to check out Threadspotting during my weekly visit to The Straight Dope archives. That’s where I discovered the thread were Og was born. I have admired the Dopers ever since, but it took a while to get up the courage to post.
My first post, IIRC, was in response to a thread about the evolution of your personal spirituality. While I despise the theist/atheist debates, this was a good thread with people being honest about their experiences with religion.
This One…:dubious:
None. I’ve been reading the Straight Dope books for years, and lurked on the board for about six months before I joined. I coulda’ been a '99er if I wasn’t as patient, but at least I have a cool user number.
That thread was something, I really miss SPOOFE, if you are lurking please come back.
