As I observed in another thread, the oil spill is apparently the latest “Obama’s Katrina” (as most recently observed by The Daily Show). Conservative commentators are demanding to know just what Obama is doing about the spill and why he’s not doing more.
That made me wonder: what CAN he and the government at large do at this point? What more could he do that he’s not doing already? Whatever it is, is it actually any sort of good idea?
I was going to start this thread.
I think the answer is obvious. Obama needs to put on his cape and shiny red boots and head down to the Gulf of Mexico to clean it up himself. Because as we all know the President has special powers for dealing with disasters that go way beyond what any supposed “industry experts” might think they can do…
I had to laugh at a headline that suggested that the Federal government should be even more involved and should have become more involved right from the start. Because everything runs better when you put a government bureaucrat in charge!
In all seriousness, the only thing the Federal government has to offer at this point is a nuclear weapon, should they decide to seal this leak the Soviet way. Of course, I don’t think anyone has suggested that that is the correct course of action here… but it’s the only thing in the government cupboard that hasn’t been thrown at this problem yet.
The Republicans can piss and moan about it all they want but if they have solutions they need to be offering them instead of just saying “How come the Dems can’t figure out how to fix this on their own?” The fact that they’re not offering any solutions just exposes the truth of the matter: they don’t have any.
Is Brownie not available?
Would there be a way to seal the leak with such a bomb? One might guess any radioactive discharge would be less consequential than the damage from umpteen million barrels of oil.
Please don’t laugh at me: I am ignorant, but fighting that is what SDMB is about, right?
Get on your knees and pray.
All of this might be God sending everyone messages.
From my layman’s understanding, it seems that the spillage is occurring from the pipe that led from the bore’s surface, to the oil rig. I don’t know how far the bore hole goes down to reach the oil deposit they were drilling, but couldn’t that shaft have been prepared with an explosive that would collapse the bore beneath its surface, in the event of such an accident? Doesn’t help here, I know, but maybe it should now be a prerequisite before any more wells are drilled, if it is feasible?
