What should be done about Haiti?

Probably true, but I would also assume it would be fairly easy to identify people who crossed illegally into DR, what with Haitians mainly French-speaking and Dominicans mainly Spanish-speaking. But as mentioned, I suspect the border is heavily monitored in areas it’s not outright fortified. DR bring relatively stable and successful, but not wealthy, I think they would want no part in any intervention with their island neighbor, but just keep the chaos over there.

Mitch Albom, who sponsors a Haitian orphanage, and some other Americans managed to flee Port-Au-Prince, barely.

How about a different type of unworkable solution? I agree Haiti is not the US’s problem, but I do favor my country assisting disadvantaged persons and supporting human rights internationaly (something we’ve historically been horrible at.)

Forget about nation building. Give Haiti up as lost and, instead, have a community of nations offer free immigration/asylum to whomever wants to leave. (Another thing the US has historically sucked at.). Commit military or whatever resources it takes to enable anyone to make it to the airports/ports, set them up someplace else, and allow the gangs to just do whatever they wish. When/if the gangs wish to change their ways and interact with the international community, well, perhaps that might be gradually allowed, and folk who wish to return be allowed to.

Sure, the Haitians did nothing wrong, and ought to be allowed to enjoy their lives in their historical land, but that’d just too damn bad. I’d suggest a similar attitude/approach towards the Palestinans/Afghans…

Sounds good. I compiled a complete, exhaustive list of the nations eager to accept and pay to support millions of empoverished brown people:

Many internationally are doing far better than the US with far fewer resources. Many developed countries are facing demographic challenges related to aging populations, and would do well to welcome increased immigration.

Hell, we could just give them half of Wyoming or one of the Dakotas!

Haiti’s population is - what - 11-12 million? That’s a couple of good months along the southern border, isn’t it?

CNN opinion article from someone born there but immigrated to the US at ten.

At the bottom, he talks about possible US role solutions. I would be curious to know how his opinions match up with those of the general populace there.

Linguistic differences formed the modus operandi for the Parsley Massacre (linked by @JRDelirious above) where Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo ordered the murder of Haitians living in the DR near the border. Allegedly, soldiers distinguished between Haitians living in the DR and “true” Dominicans based on how the pronounced the Spanish word for parsley. Somewhere from thousands to tens of thousands were killed.

That was a hard read. Awful.

So it sounds like the new Prime Minister will be relatively weak, while the opposite is needed.

Only two years? It’s good that they arrived almost immediately.

I think they need several thousand to have any impact at all.

Considering that Kenya itself is experiencing unrest, I’m not sure what to think.

That where they went to is probably safer than where they came from?
