Well fortunately for me, I don’t let a few morons on twitter dictate what I can do in my life.
The story of America: "White guy not really bothered by white racists; also thinks racism is overblown. "
They’ve also done it with milk and with Taylor Swift, which raises an interesting question: What do you do when you are the next alt-right symbol used solely to promote hatred and violence? Is personal polysemy unseemly?
I don’t let morons on the internet tell me what to do either. Which is exactly why I feel entitled to my negative opinions about the okay gesture and the people who think it’s the height of hilarity.
The only people I see dictating what others should do are people urging others to ignore this behavior. Sorry, but that’s not how this works.
You are completely free to name your kid Adolph, do the okay gesture every time your buddy whips out a camera, wear a T-shirt with “88” on it, and dress up in blackface every Halloween. But this freedom does not make you immune from the judgements of others. That’s all that we’re talking about in this thread.
Hell, I’m ready to judge him just for drinking Coors.
Yeah, I rerad that and I am not buying it. They have pics of two assholes giving the OK sign, and thereby-** it’s a white power secret sign!!!**
:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
Nope, it’s just two assholes giving the Ok sign. You know, as people do. Note that they are giving the standard Ok sign not the “white power” version, upside down.
If you’re smart, you come out with a statement that forcefully denounces any association with groups that seek to use your image for nefarious purposes.
If you’re not smart, you passively allow racists to control your image, allowing the public to make assumptions about your affiliation.
Sure you do. You are letting a few morons on Twitter make you believe that the OK sign is a sign of white nationalism/supremacy.
There are just a few stray racists. So what if they are in the White House? They are still strays!

Just some observations:
Stress isn’t caused by what happens in the world; Stress is caused by how you REACT to what happens in the world. (Ex: One person stuck in traffic going home, late for dinner with guests might be highly stress. Someone in the same traffic jam who has 4 bratty kids, a toxic spouse and overall miserable home life might find it peaceful just sitting listening to music. Same traffic experience, different reaction.) Negativity is like that. If you expect to see racism everywhere, you will probably see it everywhere.
I used to work in new broadcasting; I left when the GM stated the business model was shifting from providing “Information” to “Infotainment”. Also known as the FOX Model, where you don’t give the consumer what they need, you just feed them back what they want to hear. Do you think CNN leans left? It probably does…because FOX made a ton of money by leaning right. News isn’t about red or blue…it is about the green. Do you think that article ran because someone investigated to see if there is racism in military schools? Of course not. They ran it because it is ambiguous and you can see in it whatever you want to see. It is click-bait. And pretty much everyone here has taken the bait…it doesn’t even matter what side you fall on. People have spent 221 messages talking about this story. Are you not entertained?
It is (because it’s more than “a few morons”, it’s much of the white supremacist movement). It’s also just the OK sign. If I put up the OK sign at you when you hit a home run and say “great job!”, then I’m just giving you the OK sign, and that’s absolutely fine. If I secretly do the OK sign (upside down, which is how I think it works for the racists) in a group photo while in uniform, then I’m probably trying to signify subtle support for white supremacism (or trying to piss people off by pretending to signify subtle support for white supremacism), and that’s not absolutely fine. YMMV, but I don’t think this is terribly complicated. Human communication, including language and even gestures, changes, sometimes very rapidly.
You are letting morons on 4chan make you believe that this is a hoax.
Hey, this is fun. Let’s keep playing this game!
What I do find entertaining (or possibly annoying) is how easily some people are offended by the slightest BS.
Let’s be clear. Ain’t no one in this thread is stressed about the incident we’re talking about.
The only people who are stressed right now are the cadets who are under investigation for their unnecessary antics at the game. They’re the ones having to be summoned to someone’s office and grilled.
And that’s how it always is when stupidity goes down. The faux concern should be reserved for the idiots who act like idiots, not for the bystanders who are discussing the idiocy.
I find it unlikely that you can find any posts of mine where I say that anything by anyone on 4chan is anything.
I am using years of experience to know that it is the circle game. Not the opinion of morons on the Internet.
It’s “much” of the white supremacist movement? How much is “much”? Can you site any statistics of how many members of the white supremacist movement are using the “OK” sign?
Can you cite what percentage of the United States the people who use the OK sign to signify white supremacy makeup?
If the right to offend is part of the right to free speech (which I support), then the right to be offended is also a right. Right?
So, if you find yourself commenting on people who are offended by something you find trivial (“slightest BS”), then why is their objection not as trivial (to you) as the trivial offense itself?
No and no, but I don’t think such statistics are necessary for this kind of thing. We’re just talking here, and I think we can make reasonable judgments about why people deliberately repeat a gesture in a way (i.e. doing it subtly in group photos) that is only being suggested and advocated by racist assholes and/or trolls. Sure, we could try to ignore it. Probably easy to say when racist symbols haven’t been used to hammer away feelings of dignity and equality for folks like you for centuries. But I think racist symbols should be pointed out, challenged, criticized, mocked, and more… but not ignored. Ignoring bigotry has never helped progress against it. Even if the bigoted symbols are little things like this.
It’s possible some idiot just puts out this symbol, subtly/secretly, in a group photo, with absolutely no racist intent – if so, hopefully they’ll speak out and apologize with their new understanding of the recent history of the symbol.
Okay, but where have you seen me say anything about getting my beliefs from Twitter?
You haven’t even see me say that it’s only used to convey racism. These are conclusions you have jumped to.
Current events are where I’m getting my opinion about the hand sign. Depending on the context, it carries mixed messages–one being quite nefarious–and thus, it takes a special kind of obnoxiousness to use this sign with full knowledge of how it might be interpreted.
People are free to play the circle game when posing for photos. They just need to know that they might be mistaken for an alt-right racist in doing so. If that’s a consequence they can live with, more power to them. But most people care about that kind of thing.
Are these guys playing the circle game?
