The Wall
Dark Side of the Moon
The Division Bell
Animals
Feel free to suggest solo albums as well.
I 'm sure I’ve had a CD of Wish You Were Here, but I can’t find it. I liked the title track. I remember hearing a few songs from the very early albums and wasn’t too impressed, but I can be talked into giving them another try.
I’ve watched Pulse as well as the Live 8 performances this weekend so I’m seriously craving some Floyd. I like to listen late at night, I get off work at midnight, and nothing sounds better than listening the The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking, late at night on a Chicago transit ride.
The very early albums, like Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Saucerful of Secrets, are a bit different due to guitarist/vocalist/madman Syd Barrett’s participation and continued influence even after he got the boot (and the lack of Gilmour on the first album). They’re a little more psychedelic and raucous than the progressive rock most people think of when they think of Pink Floyd, but they’re great albums if you acquire the taste.
I do have to say I feel like Meddle is the great forgotten Floyd classic. Between “Echoes” and “One of These Days”, it outranks Animals, IMHO, and sits just behind DSoTM and WYWH and is arguably the equal of The Wall.
I have to put my vote behind Meddle, too. It’s actually my favorite Pink Floyd record. The only song on it I’m ambivalent about on it is “San Tropez”, I love all of the others.
Wish You Were Here is considered a very accessible album and would usually get the critics choice to this question. I am also very fond of The Final Cut (not a popular choice), Meddle and Ummagumma.
Hard for me to choose between Wish You Were Here and Meddle. I like them both, but I’ve been giving Meddle more play lately (plus, it’s fun to hear the bits in Echoes that Andrew Lloyd Webber plagiarized for The Phantom of the Opera).
And I love San Tropez, just because it’s such a “WTF? THAT’S Pink Floyd?” song.
If you like* Pros and Cons* and are not huge on their early material, then I think The Final Cut should be your next grab. It’s better than P&C IMO, but features a similar quiet/loud/quiet style and lots of great Waters high notes. As others have agreed en masse, though, you cannot go wrong with Wish You Were Here or Meddle.
Radio KAOS is available for only $4.99 on CD, that was a no brain purchase.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond is a great live track, especially on Pulse. I don’t remember caring for the studio version, but I’m sure it is worth another shot.
I get my bonus pay on Friday, so right now I’m leaning towards adding The Final Cut to my collection. Of course, I’m sure most of the other albums will be making their way to my music library very soon.
