What should I do in Durham, NC?

FYI, Xema was likely referring to the infamous Duke lacrosse case wherein a stripper falsely accused the lacrosse team of gang rape.

That is, DON’T hire strippers.

Elmo’s is good if you like diner food. Good pancakes, biscuits and gravy, etc. Nicer than your average diner. Can be crowded.

Guglhupf is has a more european atmosphere and a more upscale atmosphere. A great bakery with croissants, pastries, and “bretzels” (like a soft pretzel but in a french bread shape, with melted cheese and other toppings available.)

Vin Rouge is near Ninth St, an upscale French place. You will probably need reservations.

Parker and Otis is another option with a neat atmosphere. It’s at Brightleaf Square.

Watt’s Grocery is great, although they open at 11 for brunch on weekends.

Pity, the Durham Bulls are finishing up their schedule this week.

Duke has a lemur center that you can book a tour of.

Recommended if you like Lemurs. Not sure if they would do a tour on Sunday, however.

This thread illustrates a problem with the area, IMHO: there are a lot of places to eat and drink, but non-food things to do can be a problem.

It’s a bit of a drive, but the carolina tiger preserve about 10 miles SW of Durham is worth a trip if it’s open.

There are three breweries in Durham. Triangle Brewery was the first; it does tours every Saturday. Doors open at 1, tour starts around 1:30. Try the Imperial Amber if it’s on. Fullsteam Brewery and Bull City Burger and Beer are the others. I’m not sure about their tour times and hours.

The Geer Street Beer Garden is newly opened and features local microbrews. Tyler’s, as has been mentioned, has a wide selection and focuses on NC beer but has lots of other stuff as well.

Do you go to Duke? Man, that takes me back. You’d have been the kind of dude I’d have hung out with for sure.

nope, UNC

I’d have hung out with you anyway.

I guess things have changed since I lived there in the early '60s. One of the first things I did when I moved there was to get a guide to the Durham area. The first thing listed in the “Things To Do In Durham” section was “Tour the Pepsi Cola Bottling Plant”.

Full Steam (which is around the corner from Geer Street Beer Garden–some locals call this area Beer Geer) has a bar and kind of a play room (pinball, etc.) that’s fun and laid back. There are frequently interesting food trucks around. I don’t know if they do tours, exactly, but you can see into the brewing area. - Fullsteam Brewery
