What smells worse than possum poo? NOTHING!

It is so bad. Bad, I tell you. How bad is it? Let me explain.
I set my cage trap last night, baited it with chicken scraps, hoping to catch one of the many feral cats plaguing our neighborhood, screeching at all hours of the night, fighting in the street, using our back yards as litter boxes. I have done this many times before.
But what did I get? Yep, a huge possum. It emitted a purring/growling sound when I went to look at what I had caught. It had also emitted quite a bit of poo, which had gotten smeared all over the bottom of the cage as well as the cement beneath it. Apparently possums do this when they are nervous. I opted not to call animal control, as I would rather send the cats away. Also, A.C. can take a very long time to respond and sometimes they don’t show up at all.
Anyway: I could barely breathe as I opened the trap door and tried to shoo the possum out of there. This poo is so putrid, so rotten, so vile, that I would rather have smelled a blend of horse manure, dog and cat waste, and dead things.
I swear it’s still imprinted on my brain now, hours later. When it dries up a bit, I will scrub the cage and the cement. I just can’t face it now, in the heat of the day. Yeeeeesh.

Just thought I’d share.
If you know of anything that smells worse, please do jump in and tell us all about it.

Possum poo that has been left to fester for a few days on possum cages at the Wildlife Rehab place. mremilyforce and I used to volunteer at one. mremilyforce considers it a point of honor not to shirk any disgusting task that comes his way; other volunteers had a way of evaporating when the staff suggested it was time to wash down possum cages, so he ended up doing possum cages every time. (I did a few of them with him, but then I got trained in syringe-feeding baby doves, which is also disgusting, but not as smelly, and in equally high demand).

I am told that dead possum left accidentally in the garbage can in Texas heat for a week is a pretty traumatizing aroma, too.

You have my sympathy.
