1 - Another Day in Paradise - Phil Collins
2 - Downtown Train - Rod Stewart
3 - We Didn’t Star the Fire - Billy Joel
4 - Just Between You and Me - Lou Gramm
5 - Don’t Know Much - Linda Ronstadt
I’ve only heard of one of those songs (We Didn’t Start the Fire)…though I did like it.
5: ON AND ON - GLADYS KNIGHT & THE PIPS
4: DON’T LET THE SUN GO DOWN ON ME - ELTON JOHN
3: ROCK AND ROLL HEAVEN - RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS
2: ANNIE’S SONG - JOHN DENVER
1: ROCK YOUR BABY - GEORGE MC RAE
4 songs which barely ping my memory banks-and one (Elton’s) on my current rotation.
I am having trouble making “Nothing really good” and “Crocodile Rock” relate to each other in my mind. “Crocodile Rock” is one of pop music’s greatest singles of all time and probably will be the one Sir Elton will be remembered for out of his impressive portfolio of compositions.
The top 5 from the week of May 16, 1969:
Top #5 songs in the USA
The 5th Dimension - Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures)
The Beatles - Get Back
The Cowsills - Hair
Mercy - Love (Can Make You Happy)
The Isley Brothers - It’s Your Thing
OK, “Hair” was the big musical of the year, so two singles from that, naturally. The best song out of the bunch was “Get Back” at #3.
1 LIGHT MY FIRE –•– The Doors
2 I WAS MADE TO LOVE HER –•– Stevie Wonder
3 WINDY –•– The Association
4 CAN’T TAKE MY EYES OFF YOU –•– Frankie Valli
5 A WHITER SHADE OF PALE –•– Procol Harum
Not a bad batch. With regard to how it fitted my taste at the time… I was just starting to become attuned to the Top 40 and was more into bubblegummy stuff (my first two record purchases, approximately 7 months earlier, had been the Monkees’ “I’m a Believer” and the Royal Guardsmen’s “Snoopy vs. the Red Baron”).
Debbie Reynolds: “Tammy”
The Crickets: “That’ll Be the Day”
Jimmie Rodgers: “Honeycomb”
The Everly Brothers: “Wake Up Little Susie”
Elvis Presley: “Jailhouse Rock”/“Treat Me Nice”
1 1 12 LOVE WILL KEEP US TOGETHER-CAPTAIN & TENNILLE
2 6 12 The Hustle-Van McCoy
3 7 6 Listen To What The Man Said-Paul McCartney & Wings
4 3 15 Wildfire-Michael Murphy
5 5 15 Love Won’t Let Me Wait-Major Harris-Atlantic-July
Huh, I would have thought “Mony Mony” was earlier than that. Can’t say that any of these would be among my favorites of 1968, let alone my lifetime, although “Mrs. Robinson” is pretty classic.
These were the top five songs three days after I turned 12 in June of 1989.
1 Satisfied Richard Marx
2 Baby Don’t Forget My Number Milli Vanilli
3 Good Thing Fine Young Cannibals
4 Miss You Like Crazy Natalie Cole
5 Buffalo Stance Neneh Cherry
I don’t even remember number 1. Number 2 is an embarrassing chapter in music. I really liked FYC and have fond memories of Buffalo Stance. I remember the Natalie Cole song, but am neutral toward it.
1 BIG GIRLS DON’T CRY –•– The Four Seasons (hated it)
2 RETURN TO SENDER –•– Elvis Presley (meh)
3 ALL ALONE AM I –•– Brenda Lee (ignored)
4 BOBBY’S GIRL –•– Marcie Blane (HATED IT)
5 NEXT DOOR TO AN ANGEL –•– Neil Sedaka (ignored)
Only two from Top 40 that week that I did like:
13 ONLY LOVE CAN BREAK A HEART –•– Gene Pitney
and…
36 ESO BESO! (That Kiss!) –•– Paul Anka
l loved this song. Excruciatingly embarrassing today-- Smarmy, tuxedo’d singer in smoke-filled nightclub type stuff-- but I still have the record, and God help me – I still like it. Don’t tell anybody.
