What sports will still be going on over the next month?

And now the bad news: after a weekend of truncated action, the AFL is suspending the season until May 31.

The candidates tournament for the chess world championship is going on now. Whether or not you consider chess a sport, it might be the sportiest event going on right now.

Are they playing face-to-face or remotely?

Face to face, in Russia. A few things have been messed up by the virus, such as some players not being able to bring their assistants or trainers with them. The one American player commented yesterday that he’s not sure he’ll be able to get home after the tournament, because of all the travel restrictions.

And there are some more minor things, like the traditional handshakes are optional now, so some players are starting games with that elbow bump thing instead. There was a slightly weird moment where one of the players refused a handshake from former world champion Karpov, who’s a legendary and very esteemed player.

There are only 8 players, so in some US states, they could legally go to dinner together :stuck_out_tongue:

They isolated the two Chinese players for a couple of weeks before the tournament, and everyone else is just being protected and evaluated constantly. Not much risk there at this point.

And now the chess has been stopped as well, at the halfway point of the tournament. It’s a bit ridiculous hearing the FIDE people’s justifications for starting it in the first place, as if it wasn’t obvious how the situation was going to keep deteriorating as it has.

Since there are no motorsports going on, I’ve been following the 1989 Formula 1 season through the magic of the internet. The lack of on-screen graphics is a big adjustment, they only flash the top-6 standings on the screen maybe every few laps. You really have to pay attention to the announcers to know what’s going on. Want to know where your favorite midfield driver is? Hopefully they mention him at some point. I take for granted that today you can glance at the screen and tell what lap they’re on and the position of every driver.

Florida Derby was run with no fans on Saturday. That’s a pretty big race in the lead up to the Kentucky Derby which has been postponed.

Not a lot based on what I’ve heard. It sounds like there won’t be NBA playoffs, MLB will be postponed if not cancelled and we may not even get a football season. I did see something on the news about a horse race that just happened. Guess I’ll have to learn to enjoy golf.

Belarus says: Virus? What virus?

Economist suggested maybe getting some elite athletes and trainers quarantined, tested and allowed to play in an empty stadium.

I know I would watch it.

Things on TSN are getting weird. They are showing something from The Ocho - Dodge Juggling. And it is probably exactly what you are thinking

Wimbledon, which would have taken place in late June and early July, has been cancelled, as has the Cubs-Cardinals MLB series that was to take place in London on June 13-14.

What sport?

Added to this, rumors of which I am reading very suspicious claims the NBA is “considering” a fan-less, quarantined NBA playoffs in either Las Vegas or Atlantic City.

At this point I think leagues are sending out trial balloons on SM just to see how the public will react.

Just give it up.

Is the whole country being treated to a re-run of the Celtics’ 131-92 rout of the Lakers in Game 6 of the 2008 NBA finals? Or is it something special for us Boston-area fans?

I saw it , it was an ABC game today so I assume the whole country could watch it.

I can’t imagine how that would be of much interest to the rest of the country.

Trump said he thinks little league will start on time! Maybe sports books can take bets on that.

Since I’m not a basketball fan, I don’t know if they’re still doing it, but three weeks ago, at what would have been the start of March Madness, CBS ran broadcasts of classic NCAA tourney games of the past; the first one they showed was the 1982 Georgetown-UNC championship, where Michael Jordan hit the game-winning shot. My second cousin was a trainer for the Tar Heels then - which is how I later came to get MJ’s autograph - and my dad’s boss was a huge Carolina fan, so I’d been to a couple of games that year. Was looking forward to seeing the game, but my DirectTV subscription was bunged up, so I missed it.

Wrestlemania is on but with no fans they are doing it in TV studios. I guess fake sports are still happening.
