Maybe it is a Goatse
Yep, you can. See my first post in this thread. Shoddy stitching and material on a handbag can be spotted a mile away. I don’t judge anyone for it, it’s just that they’re of obvious inferior quality and not meant to last long. When you buy a real Coach/Fendi/Insert Brand Here, you know you’re purchasing something that with a little care can last you a very, very long time.
Unless, as I mentioned, it’s for ironic value or whatever, I am flummoxed as to why someone would purchase a knockoff just for the logo, no matter how convincing the logo it is - basically you’re flaunting the brand without having the benefits of the better design, craftsmanship and materials that the brand is [or should be] known for.
You can find very, very, very convincing knockoffs (though even these will usually run you into the hundreds rather than the tens). But people still pony up for the real deal. And they aren’t all Paris Hiltons.
Then you would have a knock-off of the Stephen Sprouse designed Vuitton bag!
Speaking for myself, I would make my own. I would use good materials and try to do a good quality job in the construction of the purse. I would choose fabrics that I thought were pretty. But, not everyone wants to do that or wants to go through the hassle.
I think if you’re going to pay hundreds of dollars for such a bag, it at least should be attractive. It appears that these bags are well-made, but they are so exceedingly ugly!
I’ve been teasing my two best friends lately about having purse envy. They both have Coach purses that are exactly the right size, they zip, and they’re cute darn it. I can find purses that are the same size at Target, for example, but they don’t zip; or if they zip they’re much larger or smaller. It’s a bit of a nightmare. If I’m going to take the next step up and go to Nordstrom’s (for example, any major department store, other than shoes and Clinique, I’m not familiar with their stock) I figure that I might as we shell out the extra bucks for a purse I know will last through a nuclear winter.
On a side note, when my best friend and I were discussing her purse, we had another friend in the back seat half listening to the conversation. She said the name of her purse (Coach) and from the backseat we hear, “Cooch? Cooch? What are you guys talking about? Did you start talking about sex without telling me? And why bring purses into this? Did someone start making them out of coochs?” Now her cute and expensive purses are referred to as cooch purses.
Haven’t been reading your Veblen lately, have you?
Of course, the other problem with buying knockoff designs–aside from the quality issue–is that the people you should be trying to impress will laugh at you, and the people who you do impress aren’t the ones who are worth impressing.
I agree with this! I really don’t care for the LV logo or the Coach C logo bags - they kind of make my eyes go squirly.
However, I can appreciate a well made handbag. duh.
I dunno . . . I love knock-off handbags. I sat next to a girl in class today with a knock-off Louis Vuitton bag, and I almost congratulated her, except I don’t think there’s any way to make “I love your knock-off bag!” sound sincere, even when it is. Something about it seems sorta ghetto-fabulous and subversive; a “Goach” handbag sounds so frickin’ cool to me. But I have a thing for fucking with brand identity.
I always scoffed at the idea of paying so much for a handbag. In fact, I went many years with none at all. Then I ended up with this one from Coach (in black):

It’s awesome. It’s very soft and sturdy, stays on my shoulder, and only takes on hand to open (no zippers, just a flap with a twist clasp). The leather/stitching are pretty high quality, and I have a feeling it’s going to last a lot longer than other bags I’ve had. All in all, I’m starting to think it really is worth the money.
However, I have to agree that the “signature” logo print bags are hideous.
I thought this was going to be about poorly-designed logoes, like the classic automobile, the Honda CMC.
I unwittingly found myself at a “purse party” a couple of years ago. Picked up a knock-off Kate Spade Messenger Bag for $35 before I’d even heard of Kate Spade (I’m fashion-challenged). It was about what I’d normally pay for a purse and I bought it simply because I liked the style and material. It seems pretty well-made and has outlasted purses I bought at department stores. The downside is that people think I’ve blown $200 on a purse when they know very well I don’t have $200 to blow on a purse. The upside was all the compliments I got on it. Who needs the real thing? It’s not like I really care if it says Kate Spade or not. It’s a nice purse.
Disclaimer: At the time, I had no idea I was buying a knock-off and that those purse parties are not kosher.
UrbanChic - where’s that clandestine pic lady - I’m anxiously awaiting it for identification!
Sorry. I got tied up on conf calls and couldn’t go downstairs to snap a few pics. I may try again later this afternoon.
Wait. I searched for ‘coach knock-off’ on google and found this. That pattern’s a little tackier than what I usually see, but you get the picture.
Hey, that’s my tire pattern.
Wow. That really is a “Goach” isn’t it. Yucko.
 OH MY EYES!!! OWOWOWOWOWOWO!!! PLEASE tell us before we click the link that things will be painful! That was HORRIBLE. I’m gonna be scared for life.
