What the fuck is this republican "brand" I keep hearing about?

It’s a “brand” thing when you have Republican candidates refusing to use the term “Republican” to describe themselves, because they know that there are people who won’t vote for them purely because of that. Case in point? Republican Dino Rossi, who is running (again) for the Washington State governorship (is that a word?). He has listed, as his party affiliation “G.O.P.” and NOT “Republican” (the only candidate for statewide election to do so, by the way).
