What the Heck is "Ethnic Culture & Entertainment?"

So I am breezing through mediabistro and monster.com, et al, as is my wont. And I come across an ad for freelance writers. I quote: “Freelance writer is needed for new magazine that focuses on entertainment, culture and style . . . Looking for a writer that is comical in his/her approach to journalism/article writing and is familiar with ethnic culture and entertainment.”

“Ethnic?” I’m Eastern European by ancestry. What qualifies as “ethnic” nowadays? What the hell is this a polite euphemism for?

I would guess that they mean African-American or Latino, but goodness knows.

I thought the shorthand for African-American and Latino was “urban.”

Does “gay” count as ethnic? 'Cause I am so there.

No, ethnic refers to latino and african culture primarily. Urban typically refers more to the black side of ethnic.

I don’t suppose having seen all of Carmen Miranda’s films will get me an “in,” will it?

If the ad had said “ethnically ambiguous and culturally obtuse” I’d be all over that.

And I hear I was hoping I could sign on and do a ten part article on polkas, ludefisk and back bacon…
