That’s not gotcha journalism as I understand it. To me, “gotcha” is when the journalist purposefuly asks questions about subjects he knows the interviewee doesn’t know all that well, or phrases his questions in such a way that the interviewee will retort something that’s either flat out wrong, or not 100% coherent with previous positions, or make for one hell of an out of context soundbyte etc…
It’s not so much about asking hard questions, as asking trick questions. The “have you quit beating your wife ?” kind of journalism.
