What the hell is Sony doing with the Vita?

Ah, I know the commercial you’re talking about. It will run many games you download on the PS3, but it won’t be running any disc based PS3 games.

I think you misunderstood that commercial as well. You can’t play any games on the WiiU controller outside of the range of the console.

Ok some quick updates here.

My wife got me one for our anniversary but she won’t let me have it until the 15th. ARGH!!!

I’m pretty sure she got me Lumines, Uncharted, and Hot Shots Golf.

I finally got my hands on one of these at Best Buy today to actually play around with it. It’s fucking AWESOME!!! I can’t wait to get this thing on the 15th. She wouldn’t even budge with me taking a week long business trip this week. Ugh.

One cool thing is that tomorrow, and only tomorrow, you can download the new Motorstorm RC game for free from the PSN and it’s gotten really good reviews. It’s only free on 6 March though.

This is scary to me because I told my wife she needs to open the Vita, put the memory card in, figure out how to assign it to my PSN account with the name/password I provided, find where to download this game and get it for me. She is NOT technically inclined and I hope she can pull it off because I want that game.

I want to pick up MLB the Show 12 for it too so I can play games on the road but still merge it up with my PS3 version.

Please wife don’t hose this up!

I’ll report back on the hardware once I finally get it in my dirty hands.

Can’t you download it on PSN directly? Or do you have to have a Vita account? Would it be possible to sign in via the Vita tonight/tomorrow and link it to your PSN account, and then download it via the website tomorrow?

Just thinking outloud here…

Why is your wife so adamant about the 15th? It’s a gift of love meant to give you joy, but she’s withholding it? I don’t get it.

Because I’ve ruined almost every present I’ve ever gotten by getting it early.

FYI she was able to get the Motorstorm game downloaded for free so at least I have that success there!

I played with it a bit at the store today. Is it supposed to be so sluggish? It took forever for the demo to load. So much that I took out my phone and fucked around on facebook for a bit.

Other than that, it was very pretty. I kinda want one now.

Yeah, the demos seemed to load slow and wouldn’t let you click past anything. I haven’t heard of any complaints online from people saying it’s slow.

I’ll have mine in my grubby hands on the 15th and I’ll give a full review shortly after.

I decided to jump in and buy it. I’ve had it for almost two weeks. Initial observations:

– its a really nice piece of hardware - the screen is beautiful (hi-res, deep contrast), and controls are tight and responsive. The second analog stick solves my complaint with the PSP. It feels lighter than the PSP as well.

–as noted above, memory is expensive. Wireless range seems to be less than the other mobile devices in my house.

–the currently released games that I have played seem “nice”, but nothing is my cup of tea. Going to get Unit 13 this weekend.

–I’ve hit a few glitches that will likely need firmware updates - loading some games seems to lock the system periodically (think once every two hours). Loading does take longer than I would have expected, especially given everything is on memory sticks and not a slower optical drive. Once loaded I have not seen much in terms of lag or frame rate issues - it seems fairly powerful given the visual candy of some games (Drake’s, for instance)

For now I am withholding judgement - it seems to have plenty of potential, needs for content

which games do you have? Did you get the free copy of Motorstorm the other day?

I vowed not to buy the Vita until the inevitable price drop, but I broke down and got it with Lumines and Uncharted. The hardware is very impressive; the screen will be unlike anything you’ve seen before in a portable. The battery life really blows, though.

Lumines is Lumines, but Uncharted is the real standout, at least graphically. With the exception of fire effects, which are oddly low-res, the title is really quite gorgeous. Unfortunately, it suffers from the Wii effect, where they shoehorn in all these useless tech demo-type gameplay mechanics just to show you it can be done. It’s completely unnecessary to stuff in a QTE just to open a door, but Uncharted does it ad nauseum.

What kind of battery life have you been experiencing? At least 5 hrs?

I’ve always charged the battery before running it down to empty, so I can’t say for sure, but five hours is probably a little bit of a stretch. The battery indicator is graphical only, no numerical percentage, so I’m guesstimating, but after two hours of Uncharted from a full charge it looks like I’m at right about the halfway mark. But I wouldn’t be surprised if that game is a little harder on the battery.

Oh, forgot to say, that was with 3G and WiFi off, 75% brightness.

I kinda want one, but there aren’t any games out right now that I must have.

No, missed that. So far, only Uncharted and Super Star Dust, and a few PSP games

So I finally got my Vita. Really like it alot. The screen is very nice and I love to feel of the 2 sticks. I don’t mind the interface as much as some online reviewers do. I can guess it probably gets pretty cluttered though when you’ve got lots of games and apps.

The games do load a tad slow considering they are on memory cards though. Graphics are really good.

I got Super Stardust and it’s a fun game but for some reason it shuts off the network connection as soon as the game starts every time.

I have Hot Shots Golf, Uncharted, Lumines, and Super Stardust. Haven’t tried Uncharted yet. Hot Shots is pretty much exactly the same game it’s been for a decade. Lumines is also the same game it’s been forever but I haven’t played much of it yet.

Battery life doesn’t seem super but I was really fiddling with it alot tonight and had wifi on and what not.

Near is surprisingly neat. I turned it on expecting to not see anyone in my neighborhood with a Vita but there were 6 people within a half mile who had played one which was cool.

Oh Motorstorm RC is fun. Doesn’t look like you can play online though.

I actually picked it up today. I’ve been really busy and I figure this is just the thing to help me relax. I have a PS3 but when it’s half an hour until bedtime I don’t want to be in the living playing on my big tv (1st world problems). Plus, I ride the bus quite a bit and this’ll kill time. I can’t read because it makes me sick.

I grabbed Fifa Soccer (I don’t care for soccer but I’m enjoying playing the game)
Rayman (it’s really fun so far)
MLB the Show (it’s still downloading. I’m surprised by how long it takes)
Escape Plan (it’s quirky, cool, and has a great soundtrack).

Yeah, the graphics are gorgeous. I remember when the Gameboy color came out and I was so stoked to get Pokemon for it. Man, I’m jealous of my future kids.
