I joined Myspace recently, only because one of my friends kept pestering me to. It quickly became apparent that all the coding is done by epileptic chimpanzees, and any technical problems are overseen by 14-year-old novice hackers who are asleep facedown in a bologna sandwich while the entire network goes tits-up. One problem gets fixed only to have another thing explode in its place.
The best thing I experienced there was that I met a totally awesome local guy, so at least all was not for naught.
He went to community college in the Saratoga area, so I think that must be where they met. You asked where he grew up, not the same thing.
Sure you do. :dubious: Whatever. He told me he lost his virginity to a girl with that name, real name Kim, and then I found out she had an album out, which he didn’t know. I bought RhodeSongs for him as a joke and he confirmed that was her, but he left it at my house (not too interested in it I guess), and I still have it. We’re talking about 10 years ago now that I dated him, so it’s a little hazy now, but I’m holding the CD in my hand right now.
I think more like mid-80’s. She was a little older than him, I gathered. I doubt she was losing her virginity when he was losing his.
She’s something of a celebrity, right? Part of the territory, ain’t it?
I don’t think he knows her work but I have no idea what he knows these days. I’m sure he felt lucky at the time, though.
I know. All MySpace Music pages are set by default to play the music when you first open the page. You can change that setting though in Account Settings/Music Settings. My point was that for me, it’s not a problem because I stay away, generally/for the most part. from pages that will play me crap music when I open them up. Oh yeah, it happens, but not that often. In my sphere of MySpace, I’m surrounded by good music.
I do. I did. Everything you said is correct, even the timing (because she entered into a long-term relationship in 1986). It’s just such as shock. A fascinating and interesting shock.
Hmmm…clue me in, here, if you might. Perhaps I inadvertently mixed AMW in with the other “OMG, there are sexual predators on the Itarweb!!!1!!11” shows, but I didn’t mean to do so improperly.
And who is Rupert? John Walsh’s son was named Adam.
Rupert is Rupert Murdoch, president of News Corporation, which owns both the Fox Network and MySpace. Since America’s Most Wanted runs on Fox, Rupert would probably not be happy about the fact that one of his companies is being investigated by a show on one of his networks.
trublmakr, I don’t use DSL, but the exact same thing happens to my cable. I almost never can go to MySpace without having to unplug the router and plug it back in again. You’re not the only one.
It’s one of those “Why do I have an account here again?” sites.
Ah, gotcha…talk about a conflict of interest…although to be fair, I may have inadvertently included AMW in the “MySpace Slam Tour”. Still, JW does a lot of condemning sexual predators, so…well, I can’t think of anything.
I remember (this is a slight hijack, for which I apologise appropriately) an episode of Oprah that was done on the subject of “preteen models on the Internet.” One of her special guests was a “reporter”/(IMHO) propogandist who had a bug up her ass about a particularly successful preteen model, who had found immense success modelling on the Web.
The thesis of the “r”/p, as well as Oprah, was that these websites endangered the children in question. In order to prove this, the “r”/p explained step-by-step how she found this girl, in order to prove that a predator could do the same thing.
Now, certainly, a predator could potentially find this girl, but it got a hell of a lot easier once Oprah provided step-by-step instructions on her show. How is this protecting the children in question?
I don’t happen to be a predator (too civilized, too shy, too lazy), but what if I HAD been? I was a fan of the model in question, so I knew who she was talking about. Five minutes on the Internet of following her instructions, and I knew where this girl was. I could have bought a plane ticket and gone down and victimized her.
Who is this protecting??? Is teaching people how to use MySpace to find children to victimize a good thing? Am I missing something?
I realize that people mean well, and are trying to protect our children…but teaching the general public how to find them to victimize seems a bit, oh, I don’t know, counterproductive…
Regarding MySpace’s recent problems, I just found this article:
Interestingly, I found that link on one of my ISP’s blogs, which talks about their recent problems with the blackout and other fubar mishaps. I just discovered this blog and it’s very informative. I didn’t know their data center was in the same building as MySpace’s.
I was going to leave DreamHost because of these recent problems, but I like the honesty (and the pictures used) of that blog so much I’ve decided to stay. But then, my web site there isn’t critical. I have mirrors at other ISPs and it’s a podcast site anyway, not a business site.
