What to do about my neighbor's annoying cock

I like the ear plug idea until I thought it out. Others have mentioned it doesn’t work, also it might be nice to hear the fire alarm or someone is in your flat.

I’d have a diplomatic talk with them. Give them some time to adjust and if in a week if things don’t start to settle down, have another diplomatic talk with them. But this time let them know that you don’t want to call the authorities but you will if it doesn’t stop.

It sucks to have to do it. But there’s city ordinances and bylaws for a reason. If their rooster is that special they should move to the country.

For some reason, I saw the thread title and thought this thread must be connected to the “Friends with Benefits” thread.

Maybe he should just jerk it around first.

I’ll second this. I also have chickens, but no roosters, in the city. Occasionally, the girls can get loud and I’m sure my nearest neighbors can hear them. If they complained to me, I would get rid of the offender. As Renee said, there are plenty of ways to get rid of chickens and roosters, from eating them to Craigslist.

And, for the sake of neighborly relations, I would rather they tell me directly than get the city involved. I’ll like you a lot less if I get a fine on top of having to get rid of a bird.

Call Animal Control. Really, they’re violating the law and creating a significant nuisance for the neighborhood.

Alternately, invite them over for dinner.

Damn straight. Calling some official enforcer first, without even talking to your neighbors, is far more obnoxious than keeping a noisy animal.

Not really. Illegally keeping animals on your property is pretty obnoxious all by itself. If people don’t want to get fined, maybe they should abide by zoning regs.

Perhaps the neighbours are having the same thoughts about pussies?

So I talked to my landlord about the neighbors. She said “Don’t bother talking to them in person. They’re assholes!” Apparently they will literally yell and scream at people and threaten to sue for various little infractions (but are all talk, they’re just blowhards). Oh boy. So I called the city! Code Enforcement said that they had just changed the statute in May disallowing loud fowl, so my neighbors may not be aware that it has changed. They sent a politely worded letter to them saying the statute has changed, and to get rid of the rooster.

I don’t forsee them doing so, but we’ll see. The .22 option seems better and better every day…

Ha, that’s a good ending. When people recommend that people talk to neighbors regarding things that the neighbors are doing that’s annoying, I wonder if they realize that a lot of people really flip their shit if you try to “tell them what to do”. I mean, people get nuts. I’d much rather have the police or other municipal powers deal with it. I’m glad it worked out for you.

G. You should have got a falcon.

Presumably people who do talk to their neighbors have a better idea of the distribution of actual responses than people who don’t.

Would you shoot just one or both of the neighbors?

i’m having the same problem. I talked to the neighbors, they started keeping the rooster in shed a bit more, but that didn’t solve the problem. that rooster’s crowing can be heard from miles. now the neighbors don’t care, and i can’t talk to animal control or something, coz i know they wont’ do anything. i want to poison em now. Would rat-poison work? but that’d kill the chicks too, or make their eggs contaminated.
what should i do?

I would prefer to have the police or local citizen official contact me about a problem than having the neighbor come talk to me about it. This is why, by the time someone decides to contact you directly about the problem they were very upset about it and they might not be up to the skills to handle the situation. I wouldn’t want an angry neighbor coming to my door to give me a piece of their mind about whatever it is. I’m not a jerk at all, and I am very respectful to others, but I have to be made aware of the problem and I’d prefer official channels, because they will handle it hopefully with some good solutions. Maybe in this case they can put the cock someplace else, I don’t know the area, just a suggestion. I don’t know a thing about animals and they might have solutions which are reasonable this home owner didn’t do or is aware of.

I don’t think notes are a great idea because just like talking to someone about the problem they can ignore it or just give you a bunch of excuses like there is nothing they can do about it, or something like “Cocks just make noise…” and something which isn’t going to help.

IMPORTANT Don’t simply talk to the officials about it to make a complaint, you should read the actual laws/ordinances yourself. Here is why, I had a serious problem with a neighbor who had a dead falling huge tree headed right for our house. This neighbor has always been a problem, if you talk to him he refuses to do anything even if he was going to fix it anyway cause he’s a real asshole. The entire neighborhood hates this guy. OK, so when I contacted a city official about it, he give me a bunch of excuses saying he wasn’t in power to do anything about it and it was a civil matter meaning I had to take him to court. It was complete bullshit, this city official simply didn’t want to do his job and because of political favors couldn’t be fired. But I managed to find the city ordinances online and it included exactly what this guy’s job title was and what he was required to do. So I continued to send e-mail to him and his boss quoting the city ordinances that it was indeed his job until they sent the neighbor a letter and talked to him saying they would fine him unless the tree was removed. He got the dangerous tree removed. Now, the neighbor doesn’t even know it was me who complained because he is still friendly to me, comes up to me at the local grocery store and chats.

Now if I had walked over and talked to this guy to begin with about the tree, he wouldn’t have taken it down and delayed forever because he’s an asshole based of his history with everyone in the neighborhood and I experienced that first hand in the past with him myself. Not everyone is going to be a good guy about a problem and take care of it right away. I know I do. If I put up new lights or whatever, I asked the neighbors around me if it’s bothering them and if someone were to say yes I would make changes to make them happy or remove them because I know what it’s like to live around something that’s very annoying.

Again, read the actual city code yourself, because local city staff is likely to just tell you there is nothing they can do about it even if it’s on the books or simply try to handle you by saying something like “Oh, the farm house has been here a long time and that’s what farming is like…” or “We have the same thing near me and it doesn’t bother me at all, you just have to get use to it…”. Or try to tell you something else to get rid of you.

You have a right to peace and quiet, and this is why noise ordinances are in every city I’ve ever looked at. It’s because noise can really negatively impact the lives of people around it.

Do NOT take any drastic action such as killing the thing, besides getting you in trouble they may simply go out and get another cock and then you are back with the same problem.

Not everything results in a fine. They contact and make the home owner aware of the problem first. They only fine as a last resort. We pay taxes for the salaries of these people it’s best to let them do their job and deal with these issues. Trust me, you’d rather have an official phone you than an angry neighbor who is really to kill you come pounding at your door because they are at their wits end with the noise and lack of sleep.

Yes, I agree. I don’t know why people think calling officials to do their job is somehow a terrible thing to do. People who are making noise are almost always aware of the problem and simply don’t care if it’s bothering other people because they likely have a Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD):

Do NOT ask things like this on this message board, it’s against the rules to talk about or ask anything relating to illegal activity.

Furthermore, I’m going to close this topic as it was bumped up by this post only and has probably been taken care of by now.
If anyone else has anything else to add, however, feel free to make a new topic on the subject.
