So Mr. Winnie and I had these grand reservations to spend our anniversary weekend in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Our anniversary is this weekend. And there’s a massive hurricane about to hit OBX dead-on. So we’re not going.
Anyhoo… we made ourselves some plans to spend 4 days out at a little cabin just outside of Berkeley Springs. I’ve never been there myself and my husband has vague childhood memories of it. What are the best things to see and do in that area? Dining recommendations? We know about the spas/water/springs stuff and probably won’t be indulging in those for $$ reasons.
I’ve only driven through (and stopped at the Texaco… they have a very nice Texaco, LOL) but Cacapon State park has an entrance on 522 just South of town, and there’s a farmer’s market on ?Saturday?. If you’re interested in hiking, the Big Blue Trail is a spur off the Appalachian Trail. It’s also acessable off 522, North of town, I think. People in town will know.
522 – also known as the Zachary Taylor Highway – is a very picturesque drive in some parts. You can drive it from Berkeley Springs to the Northern entrance to Shenandoah National Park (near Front Royal, VA) in about 1.5 hours.
A 2-hour drive away is Luray Caverns, which are pretty cool although I can understand if you don’t want to drive that far.
