What to do: I keep getting the wrong mail!

My mailman is an idiot. He is always putting my neighbor’s (several different ones) mail in MY mailbox! This happens several times per week.

I *could *walk down the block and put it in the right box, but that seems like I am being manipulated into doing someone else’s job for them, which I’d rather not let happen.

So generally, I just take it with me the next time I have to mail a letter, and toss it into an outgoing-mailbox so they can take another crack at getting it right. If it looks important, though, I’ll go the extra mile and actually take it to the proper neighbor.

What would *you *do in this situation? Is there an official Post Office recommendation? Once in a while, I can understand helping out and smoothing over an imperfect system, but being forced to do it several times per week is really burning me up!

Label your mailbox with the names of accepted recipients if you haven’t already, then call your local post office and ask to speak to the delivery supervisor. Explain how often this is happening and when it started. If you know recent days it happened on, give that info too. It may be that you do not have a regular carrier assigned to the route and one particular substitute is being careless, so days in the last week or two that it happened could be helpful.

Edit: I’m the wife of a letter carrier, and this is the recommendation he always gives.

I agree with Ferret Herder. Also, it probably wouldn’t hurt to say something like, “I know how important it is to the Post Office to ensure accurate delivery, which is why I’m reporting this.”

Then, if it happens again, call the supervisor back with details.

That was happening to me - turns out that my street was getting a rotating crew of carriers, and there were a bunch of new people on the route. There was something hinky in the process that was getting miscommunicated.

That sounds like good advice; thanks. I do have my name BOLDLY emblazoned on my box for precisely that reason and it hasn’t helped. I will call and ask for the delivery supervisor.

By the way, I do have a regular carrier, and I have asked him about it. He flatly denies it ever happens.

I was having this problem. I left a note in my mailbox that said basically “Look, I don’t want to report you but I will if this continues. Please take more care when delivering mail.” I think I also asked in my message if there was anything I could do to help the situation.

I didn’t get a reply, but that actually fixed the problem.

Oddly enough after about a year or so, I just got 2 incorrect pieces in a week. I am guessing the regular carrier is on summer vacation.

That sounds like a good strategy, too.
