Oh, of course, I just read satellite brewery of Liene’s in Milwaukee and though it was a different one. Tuff to miss a big mauve building.
I mentioned this to a friend and he said “oooh, that’s all the way in Chippewa Falls, we’ll have to make a day out of it”
Now I get it, a satellite of Liene’s…in Milwaukee, not a satellite of 'Liene’s in Milwaukee." I didn’t know the brewery was based elsewhere. I’ve gotten so used to seeing that mural…I guess I’m just kinda…umm…Milwaukee-ist.
Sorry I came to this late.
I highly recommend the Milwaukee Art Museum. It is outstanding, and it was a huge surprise to me to find such quality in Milwaukee. I used to work at the Smithsonian and the National Gallery in DC, and I’ve seen most of the other big art museums in the US, and this is right up there.
But i do agree that the moving architectural “sail” on the building is just a piece of overblown crap.
And it looks really strange connected to something that could have been designed by Mike Brady at the pinnacle of his career.
Ooh, where can I find the architectural wonders of the head of the Brady clan?
Well, yes the building is rather strange, can’t say as I paid much attention to it, but the art inside is excellent. Actually there is some overemphasis on beer art (my guess would be the Miller being a major donor might be related to that), but that’s easy to skip over.
Well, that took some finding. This is what the Calatrava building is currently attached too. It l
Plosphr, liking our weather so far? It’s not usually this nice.
This is nice? What is it usually like this time of year? I feel like I’m back in CT.
Just kidding. You caught the end of the drought. Grass was dead and it was hotter than hades for a few weeks. This is atypical for August, for sure. It’s usually about 85 and humid, though being near the lake makes a huge difference.
I just want to say to you Land Lubber Big Lake Folk - Very nice indeed! I like your lake a lot! Can’t see across it, has an ocean feel without the salt air and you even have sea gulls!
Too bad there isn’t squat near the lakeshore to draw people to the lake. Let’s see there’s the stinky marina, the stinky waste water treatment facility and the museum.
That’s about it.
You’re forgetting — the Summerfest grounds! All summer long, one festival after another right by the lake.
Well, sure, that’s seasonal. Aside from the art museum, veterans park, and Pieces of Eight there aren’t any permanent features that I consider to be attractive to a large number of people. Bradford Beach and the surrounding lake shore could be soooo much more than it is right now. Think of Newport Beach, Daytona, etc. of course not to the same scale, but you have to start somewhere.
I think the problem is that alot of the beach is at the bottom of a 200 foot bluff. North of the lakefront there are large houses at the top of the bluff. You could probably do something on the south side where I think everything is a bit more level, but that would invovle getting rid of houses, condos and park.
That Pier Wisconsin deal is supposed to be pretty cool. The Dennis Sullivan is usually there in the summer too.
That’s right, scar the boy for life. I hesitate to quote Maxim magazine, but they were correct in listing it as the worst “attraction” in Milwaukee.
Is there some reason no one has yet mentioned The Safehouse? You really ought to go with a local, though. I’ll also recommened eating at Elsa’s, Apollo, and Abu’s Jeruselam of the Gold. And stop in at Paddy’s off of North Ave. for a drink; you’ll have to ask a local or a taxi driver how to find it.
Stranger
Safehouse was mentioned and shot down. If you want to go to a bar that’s hard to find, look for Wolski’s. (Besides, it’s owned by a friend of mine)
PS Don’t look for Wolski’s, ask someone how to get there.
We’re going to some Irish Pub this evening with the corporate jimjam so It’ll probably be a hair better than Applebees. But who knows the guy bringin us is a like long Milwaukeeite.
Ahem… There appears to be wide disagreement regarding the merits of the Safe House. Uncommon Sense and I (and, I take it, you) liked it. Others are less enthusiastic. As my wise father likes to say, “That’s why they make chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla.” But, I guess YMMV has more of a ring to it than TWTMCSAV.
Good morning, see posts #29, 30, 31, above.
