After 5 years of faithful service, my pawnshop TV has finally decided to give out in a major way. The speakers seems to be shot as there’s video but no audio (the picture tube has been going for years though). What’s the best way to dispose of it? Is there any value left in parts (mid to late 90s vintage JVC)?
Donate it to the Vets and they can generally fix anything. Take it as a tax write off.
Look through the local paper, sometimes people will be looking for these things to fix for fun. Here in Ottawa there are quite a few people who will take these things off peoples hands simply to further their knowledge. Maybe even give it to the local college?
Does the TV have audio output to a stereo receiver? If only the internal speakers don’t work, but the audio output ports still work the TV could still be used in this manner. Also, do you mean that the picture tube has been “going” as in “working” or as in “going out”, gradually getting poorer in quality?
What do you do with a broken TV,
What do you do with a broken TV,
What do you do with a broken TV
Earl-i in the morning …
sorry … I had to do that for some strange reason.
Empty it out and…
1.) turn it into a puppet theatre for the kiddies
2.) Put a glass fishtank of appropriate size in lieu of the picture tube; raise fishies in it
3.) display a picture in it
4.) turn it into a mirror
Take it into the middle of nowhere.
Bring a gun.
Shoot picture tube from a distance.
Big laffs for everyone!
Note that TV picture tubes (and computer CRT monitors) contain significant levels of lead. Proper disposal is urged.
I.e., just going outside and shooting it is not a good thing.
ftg’s right. Shoot it, then call the hazmat team to properly dispose of it.
We get alot of these in the thrift shops I work. People come in with them & say they work just great. I have to test them. Now we try to refuse them but some keep crawling back in to the stores. In one store we ask for the phone number so we can call them to come get their set back. In these parts it costs $25 to dump a tv.
