I’ve been watching some of the old 1950’s-60’s commercials that play on TVLAND. I am partcularly fascinated by the names that the adxertising mavens dreamed, to plug their products. In particular, toothpaste…one 50’s brand was “Gleem”, which contained a secret ingredient called “GL-70”. Just what this stuff did wasn’t clear-but presumably it was important in giving you a nice bright smile.
Was there any disclosure about just what this secret ingredient was, or what it contained?
Bill Bryson talks about it in one of his books. IIRC, he called the manufacturer but they never gave him a straight answer.
Personally, I think it is an American version of the miracle ingredient Fraudulin.
Probably it was lark’s vomit. There were no laws requiring warning labels back then.
