What was the first concert you attended?

Kiss, 1976, Cobo Hall, Detroit.

Awesome! I was 14 and my older brother took me.

Hard to say for sure, my parents took us to a bunch of country concerts when I was a kid. I’d guess that the first one I saw that anybody had ever heard of was probably somebody like Bill Anderson or Ronnie Milsap. First one I saw independently of them was (I think) Styx.

Styx in 76 right before they hit it big with the Grand Illusion album.

It was either Ravi Shankar at Severance Hall in Cleveland, or Judy Collins with Arlo Guthrie at Blossom Music Center.

Interestingly, I think the concert I’m attending this Friday will push Yes into the forefront, in that regard … if I’m allowed to count Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe as seeing Yes. But not dozens. I think this will make the third time I’ve seen them.

The only other bands I’ve seen more than once are Aerosmith, James Taylor and Crosby, Stills and Nash (no Young).

Of course, I could be misremembering most of that as well. The only memory ain’t what it used to be.

I saw Rush twice. I’ve seen Richard Thompson four times.

Tom Petty. I think I’m up to 8 or 9 times with him. In three states.

I have the lamest one.
What do I win?

It was A-ha in, I believe, 1986.

Taaake meeee oooooon…

Whitesnake with Great White opening. Feb 11, 1988 at the Rosemont Horizon. I still have the ticket somewhere around here.

Marillion, four times.Three with Fish, one with Hogarth

Jethro Tull, around 25 times, I think.

Greg Lake at the Palladium, with Novo Combo as opening act.

It was a pretty lame show, overall. Novo Combo had only one decent song (“Up, Pericope”), and Lake chose to concentrate on songs from his godawful new solo album. The only ELP songs he played were “Lucky Man” (which even hisbiggest fans were surely bored with), “C’est La Vie” (which he reinterpreted, and turned into a bad power ballad) and “Fanfare for the Common Man” (the least inspired classical cover ELP ever did).

Digress away!

I’ve seen Counting Crows, Metallica, Queensryche each three times. Aerosmith and Billy Joel twice, along with White Lion, Poison, Winger, and various other hair bands.

Eagles, 2009.

Lefty Frizzell, at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii about 1957.

Woo Hoo!

Sting’s Nothing Like the Sun tour. 1988 or 89?

My first concert was KISS in 1976, in Seattle. I was 13 at the time. My ears still hurt.

Phil Collins, the No Jacket Required tour, 1985

It’s either The Steve Miller Band or Lynyrd Skynyrd, but I’d have so sit down and think real hard to be sure. The count in either case would be 3 or 4 times.

Were you in the first row? Did he look right at you the whole time he was singing “In the Air Tonight?”

Is there anything more you’d like to tell us?
