I don’t think so, but “Why don’t we just kill him?” was a regular joke at the Superman planning meetings until they actually did it.
I’m holding out for Saint of Killers meets Casper, the Friendly Ghost.
Almost. This interview with Alan Moore says the idea was that “a famous super-hero found dead” would be a good opening to a story. The characters were originalyl meant to be Charleton Comics characters (DC had just bought them) until DC realized that all the characters would, in Moore’s words, end up “either dead or dysfunctional,” so original characters similar to the Charleton characters were created in their place.
I thought it was a cute idea. I don’t own it, but I think I may have skimmed a copy once. I’m in favor of simple cute crossovers, as opposed to seven-hands-in-the-writing crap like Civil War & Infinite Crisis.
I thought that was Fred Hembeck Destroys the Marvel Universe.
I assume the big ending hadn’t been conceived of by that point? Or that would’ve been the big reason, I’m sure. (Although I suppose it might’ve been okay as an AU, considering the final products’ personalities are, in a lot of cases, totally different from their preexisting counterparts…)
