– Final Fantasy VI. Best RPG on any 16-bit platform, IMHO.
– Any of the Bomberman games. Single player gets old quickly; multiplayer never will.
– Chrono Trigger. Unbelievably fun game.
– Ogre Battle. Great tactical-RPG, incredibly deep. You could play it several times through and not figure out all this game’s secrets. Also asks a good amount of moral questions. Unfortunately, the game suffers from (a) a bad translation, and (b) the Zemus/Ultimecia/Necron “I’m The Real Villain, Not This Guy You’ve Been Fighting” problem.
– Seiken Densetsu III/Secret of Mana II. Come on, Nintendo released Secret of Evermore instead of this?
Wow, I totally forgot about Turtles in Time! That was another one of my favorites. I was going to put Starfox on my list too, but changed my mind at the last minute!
Final Fantasy 3, Earthworm Jim, Street Fighter II Turbo, Donkey Kong Country and Earthbound, in no particular order.
Chrono Trigger was pretty good, but I found it way too easy. NBA Jam is probably the best sports game, and Killer Instict deserves a mention.
Super Metroid:
Not nearly as frustrating as the NES version, played and finished it many times late at night
Super Mario World
Street Figher 2 Turbo
People keep mentioning Super street fighter, I think it wasn’t as good as 2 Turbo. Anyway, many epic battles, and Chun Li WAS hot.
My votes go to SMK, FF3 (sic 6) and E.V.O.
Now I need to fire up the old emulator!
I agree. Secret of evermore was one of the worst games in existence, since there’s at least two fucking instances where if you mess up, you have to restart from the very beginning and even the first/second boss has an attack that’s impossible to avoid.
I think the game was made in 5 weeks, tops.
 ;j
NBA Jam was a good call, I forgot about that one.
** Super Mario Kart** but more specifically the 3rd course in (ghost valley I think) was perfection. Nothing beats a super-start with Donkey Kong followed by a perfect run powersliding all the way without braking once. It makes my fingers twitch just thinking about it.
Stunt Racer FX again, 3rd course in with the bike and you’re in the zone.
Street Fighter II Just perfect, I used to stay up all night smoking the bong and staring at the screen till my contact lenses dried up and fell out, convinced me and my buddy were telepathically linked. Did you ever start a game where you were both Ken and you both pull of the exact same moves at the same time about 7 moves in a row with the two Kens in perfect symmetry? scary stuff.
Killer Instinct edgy and a real hard one to memorise everyones kick ass combos.
I also liked GODS but perhaps the Amiga version was better I can’t remember.
- Zelda
- Chrono-Trigger
- Breath of Fire (There was a #2? Argg!!)
- Final Fantasy 3
I’m sure there are more, but all my games are in storage waiting patiently for me to dig them out.
And a question: I also had a RP-esque game where you had to solve a lot of puzzles, and also you collected these weird Elemental-type pets that you fed certain items to make them grow into more powerful critters. Anyone have any idea what game that was? I’m pretty sure it was SNES, but it may have been Sega.
Starfox.
There are no others. Hell, the music alone is worth the price of admission.
Starfox was pretty awesome, and the music is great! The only reason why it is not in the top five is that the game tended to freeze up on me alot. This was when Polygon technology was in it’s infancy.
Lufia 2, thats another good one I forgot.
Thought of another: Alfred Chicken. If you’ve played this game you know what I mean!
Being a real time strategy fan and wargames fan…
P.T.O.
Pacific Theater of Operations.
Takes almost as long to play as the war lasted.
PTO Rawked! There’s a version out for PS2, but I really wish they’d put a PC version out. What sucked was when all yer fleets started to run out of gas.
Turtles in Time was unusually easy. I remember I could beat it alone on the hardest level w/o using continues quite effortlessly.
I also forgot to mention Yoshi’s Island was pretty fun, too.
Hmm, it shouldn’t have frozen on you. I’ve played it constantly and it never freezes on me, it’s prolly a faulty copy.
Bump!
Yeah, it would become very very slow when there were too many moving objects on the screen at one time. It would eventually just freeze up on me, and I would have to reset the machine and start again. Starfox 64 was much better!
