I’ve been doing cardio on an exercise bike over the winter since it’s been too icy and cold to run outside. I just found out that I can play SNES while I’m on the bike, but I only have a few games. They are all Mario and DKCountry sequels and I’ve beaten them all.
Any suggestions for a good single player SNES game? Maybe an RPG?
Pedalling the bike does throw off my timing for jumping and shooting so more of a run around and explore type of a game would proabably be ideal.
Super Metroid is equal parts jump&shoot / run around and explore. Widely regarded as not just the best video game on the SNES, but possibly the best video game of all time.
Good point. brewha, if you’re looking for the SNES version of the game otherwise known as Final Fantasy VI, be aware that it is labeled as Final Fantasy III. Not to be confused with Final Fantasy III on the DS which is a completely different game.
Also keep in mind, that a lot of these RPGs can go for much $$ on the secondary market. For example, when I sold my SNES and games, i got $120 for Chrono Trigger.
$120? For a 15+ year old system? EEsh. I figured I could stop by the local Gamestop and pick up SNES games for next to nothing.
I will have to look for the other games though. I have managed to somehow make it 28 yrs as a fairly avid gamer without playing a single second of Final Fantasy anything. Maybe I’ll start with 3 or VI or whatever it is for SNES and work my way through PS1 and PS2 sequels.
I did like Metroid Prime, so I’ll probably give Super Metroid a try if I can find it - especially if it’s in the running for best game of all time!
Of course, I’ve heard alot about the Zelda games - which I also have never played. I’ll look into that as well.
Chrono Trigger is awesome, but Mario RPG should also not be overlooked. Very fun and enjoyable. Kirby Superstar is a lot of fun as well. StarFox remains one of my top favorite games of all time (I still like it better than the N64 version).
The original? :dubious:
I could swear I remember playing Sim City on the computer before then, and with far inferior graphics. Certainly didn’t have the animated mayor guy, for one.
But I do agree that it was a fun game, and second its recommendation. I’ll also add that a lot of the sim games were pretty fun, especially Sim Ant.
Oh, oh, and E.V.O.: Search for Eden. Fun evolution game. Pick and choose body parts as you evolve your critter through time. Kinda like an ancient, rudimentary Spore.
Don’t forget Super Mario RPG, it’s a classic! Very memorable and fun.
“Booster, Sir! There’s a 70% chance the object you’re standing on is a cake.” is one of the best lines in the game to me.
Also, I suggest Final Fantasy II (that’s the U.S. numbering again) for the SNES. It’s a very good RPG as well.
Then there’s Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest if you can find it. It’s toted as the ‘Beginner’s RPG’ by some because the world map doesn’t really give you freedom to “explore” as much, and the battle system is pretty simplistic. However, I still enjoy playing it to this day because it was fun.
Aside from Secret of Mana, you could also try its successor Secret of Evermore. It got a pretty bad rap by many, but it’s also pretty fun, and I like the way spells are handled. Plus there’s so many different spells to use that you can pretty much customize your character. It was a game that didn’t take itself too seriously. Now I feel like playing it again. And you could have lots of fun in the marketplace in the Egyptian world by buying, selling, trading your way to getting cool items.
I’ll try and see if I can think of more, but those are some I recommend.
Tecmo Super Bowl and Mike Tyson’s Punchout are two of my all-time favorite games. Both sports games obviously, but unlike the dreary high-poly simulators that modern sports games have become, these games are simple and goofy and just plain fun.
By “original” I meant that the original game was ported almost directly to the SNES. Of course it was a PC game first. As far as I know, the mayor animation was the only thing added to the nintendo version.
There were a lot of good RPGs on the SNES, many of which are still played today. I suspect that makes the cartridges hard to find, because no one really wants to part with them.
If you happen to have a PS1, some of these games were ported over, and you’ll be able to find them cheaper that way.
The original Super Mario Kart, *F-Zero, * and Tetris Attack (also available on the N64 as “Pokemon Puzzle League” with Pokemon instead of Yoshi, and now available for the DS as “Planet Puzzle League” without any characters, but touch-screen control)
Yeah, most games you can get for really cheap. But a lot of the RPGs were of limited quantity and are still highly desirable today – hence the high prices. But many have been reissued for the playstation, DS, etc. and those versions are much cheaper.
