What was the last sitcom to have an introductory song with lyrics?
What was you favorite?
Mine?
There’s a holdup in the Bronx,
Brooklyn’s broken out in fights;
There’s a traffic jam in Harlem
That’s backed up to Jackson Heights;
There’s a scout troop short a child,
Khrushchev’s due at Idlewild!
Car 54, Where Are You??
I think Mangosteen means introductory as in expository – theme songs that give you a rundown of the premise of the show; e.g. the ones from Gilligan’s Island, The Brady Bunch, or Alice.
“You’ve Got Time” kinda gives you the general feel of Orange is the New Black (or so I assume, having only heard the song and interviews from Piper Kerman), sorta like “I’ll Be There for You” and Friends. I don’t know if I’d count either of them, though.
Looking at TV Tropes (no link as a public service), the most recent one could be Hannah Montana. My favorite? I’ll say Mystery Science Theatre 3000, even though that’s not stricttly a sitcom.
I like the Burn Notice intro. Not a song, but gets the show’s idea across very quickly. “You know spies. A bunch of bitchy little girls.” “Should we shoot them?”
The opening theme to COMMUNITY doesn’t really fit, except it kinda does, given the absurdity of then still taking classes at a community college all these years later.
In just two lines, the intro to The Goldbergs hits on the tone and themes of the show. It’s a typical crazy sitcom family, but set in the 80s, so tinged heavily with both nostalgia and genuine retrospection.
