What was the Roman's problem with the Druids?

One thing I don’t get about the Roman occupation of Britain, is the why the had such a problem with the Druids? The Romans were famous for absorbing all the religions of the places they conquered, and not giving a crap what gods you worships as long as you paid your taxes on time. So why did they not do that with the Druids? In fact they dedicate a ton of time and effort to wipe the religion out, even to the point of opening themselves up to Boudicca’s rebellion by sending all their troops to beat down on the Druids in Angelsey.

AFAIK its not like the Jews and Christians (the other religions famously opposed by the Romans) where they explicitly banned worshiping other gods (specifically the deified dead emperors).

I get they were a center for opposition to Roman rule, but presumably that goes for ALL the Gods of people the Romans conquered. There a countless accounts of the brutal sacrifices of Roman prisoners by Celtic and German priests, but you don’t hear about their religions being singled out for attack. There is even an account of the priestesses of the Cimbri trying to negotiate employment as vestal virgins after their defeat (albeit the attempt failed and they all committed suicide). There was even a tradition of the Romans saying “Hey your god spoke to us and wants to come live in Rome now. So they totally won’t be upset when we sack your city. Then, after sacking the city, reverently taking the statues of the god in question back to Rome with them to give them a nice home there”

So why were the Druids singled out by the Romans?

I am not an historian, but the way I understand it is. . .

The Romans claimed it was because the Druids practiced ritual human sacrifice. But that may have just been a handy justification. Briton England was essentially a theocracy. The Druids weren’t just religious leaders; they were the educated class, highly literate. They were the scientists (such as science was then). They were the rule makers. They were the judges. So it wouldn’t have been the case that they would become Roman citizens and practice druidism on the side. The Druids were large and in charge. They were also the wealthy class and were very reluctant to give up any of that wealth to Rome.

So, if you’re Rome and you’re faced with a class of people who pose a legitimate threat to your authority, won’t hand over the loot, and practice human sacrifice; you kill them all and claim it was in the name of decency.
