What was this Ice Skating sport I saw last night?

At a bar last night they were showing a sport on the TV for a quick second before the channel was changed, so I didn’t get a chance to find out about it.

Foud guys dressed in hockey pads, gloves, skates and helmets, on a twisty downhill ice track, where there were slalom-like turns and jumps. I don’t think they were allowed to hit each other, just get to the bottom of the course the fastest.

Never seen anything like it.

It may have been the Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship. A very spectacular and twisted sport indeed. And the goal is to get to the finish line first without contact other than incidental.

I found a bunch of videos on youtube, but sadly not many of just the actual races. Lots of stuff edited together with (what must pass for hip) music, tho. Still, it looks like it would be fun to watch. It’s almost identical to SSX, just on ice skates instead of snowboards.

How the hell do they zamboni a track like that?

Looks cool but must they really turn everything into a nightclub / beer commercial these days? I guess it just ain’t a sport unless you got thumping music, colored stobe lights, and screaming chicks.

That was it, thanks. Bear in mind I saw it on a TV in a bar, so I didn’t have to endure the hip soundtrack.

MOIDALIZE: The news release from the Red Bull Crashed Ice event in Quebec City said: “With a Canadian coiling system to generate the ice, seventy-five cases of crushed ice will be spread over a refrigerated carpet. Water sprayed onto the ice will create a primary frozen layer before an added organic crystallizing agent makes the ice five times denser than an NHL rink.”

A look at how they do it.

That said, I’ve heard competitors say that the condition of the ice was a crucial element to deal with in the final stages of events, as of course it can’t be zambonied.

Downhill. Fast.
