What was this material? Help please.

We put a yellowish brown cloth like material in a two pieced screen funnel since when I was a kid. This was around at least 35 years ago.

We would pour water contaminated gasoline through this funnel to remove water from the gasoline. The gas would go through, the water stayed on top of the cloth that was used for the filter.

The material was used up years ago, and I would like to get some more. I think it might have been chamois.

Anybody know what the material was?

Chamois sounds right. I heard that you should funnel your auto fuel through it prior to burning it in an aircraft. Never did it though. I guess it has to do with chamois being hydrophylic. And how does a chamois stay dry in the rain ? At least it won’t get spots when it dries.
