El Modena Vanguards
Two things about mine were pretty cool…
1 - There is no other post that I’ve seen (yet) with that mascot name, so it’s original.
2- It isn’t ‘the Potters’, 'Peg legs", ‘Texans’,or God Forbid ‘Acorn’!!! What the f— is up with ACORN??? That’s so freaking funny!!!
Oh, I love it, the Yuma Criminals!!! that’s a riot!
I went to Alton High(IL) and were the Redbirds. I swear the girls teams used to be the RedWings, but that could be my imagination. They are the Lady Redbirds now. Redwings is funnier though.

I was a Jackson HS Polar Bear, in Massillon, OH. We used to have a giant polar bear pelt in the main lobby, but they moved it somewhere else (presumably due to animal rights concerns), and replaced it with a huge wooden carved polar bear. It’s, uhh…interesting. Of course, in all cheers it was just “go bears” and the like.
Then I went to college, and was a part of the Big Red. Who, coincidentally also has a bear for a mascot. And, Why a Duck, the Ithaca HS team is also the Little Red. Must be something in the water around the Ivy universities…gets into the local school board’s facilities, and makes them do stupid things like be small colors.
My high school was Martin Luther Preparatory School. We were called the Rams. The girls teams were not called Rammettes, or Rammies, or Lady Rams, or anything like that, no, as I recall they were called ‘the girls team’ or simply ‘girls’.
Question: “Did you see the girls team play?”
Answer: “Oh, I wasn’t aware the girls had a game? Who’d they play anyway?”
My college was the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point and our nickname was
Wait for it!
The Pointers (Sooooooooooooo Creative)
The women were called The Lady Pointers.
I once asked a friend I knew on the women’s basketball team if a strap-on was handed out as part of the uniform. She just smirked and replied that while it was not part of the official uniform, they were not unknown.
