What was your most embarrassing fan phase?

Hair bands. <<hangs head in shame>>

Yes, I was the 13 year old with a passion for Motley Crue (Dr. Feelgood came out when I was in 7th grade), love for Warrant, and crazy fandom for Poison. But the best of them all, the ultimate object of my misguided musical affections…Def Leppard. Even worse, because I was really pretty young still, I was such a wannabe. But I had all the black band shirts!

They weren’t even the cool bands, the ones that were putting out pretty good music! No, I couldn’t like Megadeth, Metallica, Judas Priest - the ones who actually had some talent, no not me. I go for the pretty boy long haired hacks that put out some really pretty bad stuff (well, okay, Def Leppard had some good music in there).

And I too had an NKOTB phase, but it wasn’t a very big one. I only bought TeenBeat magazines and such - I didn’t have any posters up like you weirdos.

Ick. Now I think I need a shower.

My low point was when I read Battlefield Earth - and LIKED it. Only much later did I realize how much of a waste of time and paper that book was.

Slightly better was when for a few years at Pesach I would say the Four Questions in Klingon.

You have to understand the Geek Hierarchy (referred to above) to appreciate how mucked-up BE is.

Other than the embarrassing fan phases I’m in currently, glances down at her Pirates of the Caribbean T-shirt, New Kids were the worst one for me as well. Every. Inch. Of my bedroom was covered in New Kids crap…pictures, articles, posters, shoelaces, bedsheets, wall clocks, nightgowns, T-shirts…if I was reading through an article in, dear lord, Tiger Beat magazine or whathaveyou, and it mentioned New Kids on the Block, I would cut out that sentence and on the wall it went. I was MADLY in love with Donnie, the Bad Kid on the Block, who had a tattoo and a nosering and sigh. I remember when he got into some trouble with the law for setting a hotel hallway on fire, I was convinced he was going to go to jail and I wept for DAYS. I bought the dolls, I had all the video tapes, I tape recorded the abominous cartoon series and every stupid Disney special or live TV performance they ever did.

I also saw them live twice. They did magick tricks in their shows!

I still have a soft spot in my heart for them…I keep terrifying my husband telling him that I’m going to go buy Merry, Merry Christmas one of these years. I’m 30 now, BTW. I was 12 then.

I think you’re confusing Gerardo with Ricky Martin. Gerardo sang “Rico Suave,” and Ricky Martin was in Menudo.

Er…I mean, uh, I think. So I’ve heard. I don’t really know these things; I don’t pay attention to this obvious crap. Plus it’s kind of hard to think right now with my Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan records playing so loudly in the background as I type this…

I’m currently in my most embarrasing fan phase. I’m current assembling a Necron army for Warhammer 40K based on the cover art of The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance. The Warriors will be the guys in skeleton suits, the Destroyers will be the vultures, the Wraiths will be the ninja-jumping girl, and Monoliths will be based on the buildings (with a red thread attached to one of them,) and of course the Grim Reaper and the Bandleader will be my HQ choices.

Right. At least I was too young to properly remember. You’re right in that I am confusing them madly, though. I wasn’t allowed to watch the song “rico suave” - I vaguely remember a video. With extremely tight pants, which is most likely why I wasn’t allowed to watch it. Why did he sing Rico Suave? I must go look it up and satisfy my curiosity.

Hmm. I can’t find much on Wiki, there’s an interview but it’s on youtube ( - doesn’t anyone transcribe interviews anymore? I’d much rather read than watch. And people wonder why our society is going down the shitter- too! much! TV!) anyway. Gerado’s website won’t work on my office computer - I think it’s flash or something.

I do see they have the Rico Suave movie on youtube. Must remember to watch it at home.

Did you really spell magick with a “K” while referring to tricks performed by New Kids on the Block? Witches and warlocks the world over are shivering at this moment as if someone trampled on their graves.

There was this one time, maybe in 1999, I’m not sure, when they had 3 concerts in a row in Montreal. Three days straight. I had tickets to two of them. And oh yes, I attended them both.

Not to post twice, but judging from this thread, we each have a fondness for a different New Kid. Who’s been left out? I see Jon, Jordan, Donny, and Joey have been taken. I never could remember the fifth kid anyway. I remember Donnie’s jail trouble though.

Not too long ago I was watching their videos on youtube and horrifying my SO too. I never saw them live, though. :stuck_out_tongue:

Heheh. Force of habit. Amusing, that…I didn’t even notice.

Edited to respond to Annamika’s post above: it’s Danny. No one EVER liked Danny, poor guy.

VCO3, this is a great idea for a thread, btw.

The late 80s - early 90s were chock full of embarassing fangirl memories.

I was obsessed with Paula Abdul. Wallpapered walls and everything. I was a dancer growing up and she was my number one idol. Even though she’s a basket case now, I still maintain that she was a great choreographer/dancer back in the day.

I also loved everything associated with the Young Guns movies, especially Emilio Estevez. When he and Paula Abdul got married my head practically exploded.

Oh and I read every one of the Sweet Valley High books.

Mine was New Kids, which segued into Backstreet Boys…

I had (and probably still do, in a box somewhere) Danny and Joey dolls, lots of magazines, the comics, several CD’s (New Kids Christmas album was my first CD). They broke up when I was 11ish, and then a few years later I discovered Backstreet Boys.

I plastered my walls with Backstreet Boys posters, Nick was my favourite (Joey was my fave NK) and had their cd’s, as well as all the singles and a couple of the US cd’s that I begged my Nana to buy me when she went to Florida.

That one lasted awhile, but died before Millenium.

I paid money to see The Monkees, Herman’s Hermits, and Gary Puckett and the Union Gap during their reunion tour at that time. I was in college.

I owned the entire Adam and the Ants oeuvre on vinyl.

I bought Clay Aiken’s first CD. (I’ve since destroyed this evidence, I think.)

Mel Gibson. I was starting a videotape collection of his movies. I loved all things Mel. In Mel We Trust. I refused to believe that was his hairy naked butt in Bird On A Wire because Mel’s true butt would not be hairy, it would be perfect.

Somewhere along the line, probably after Braveheart, my Mel love just fizzled (I think that’s about when David Duchovny came into my life) and then Mel went crazy. I blame myself, obviously denying Mel my fangirl love sent him over the brink. Sorry Mel, but at least I saved myself some money on that DVD collection.

I have since learned that real men do indeed have hairy butts.

Barry Manilow. And I was 14.

and I, uh, still kinda like him and will sing along when I hear one of his songs, which is surprisingly often considering how many people say they hate his stuff …

I was a Van Halen superfan in early high school. I had a locker emblazoned with stickers and scrawlings of the VH symbol, band calendars, poster, a full wardrobe of t-shirts and shudder bandanas. I routinely wore tons of band buttons and lapel pins, looking like I was trying to meet the flair requirement at Shotskies. I loved creative writing at the time, and wrote tons of horrid fanfic short stories integrating the band members into scifi space opera situations.

Fortunately, Sammy Hagar joined the band and their music instantly went to crap, so I snapped out of it.

Ding ding ding! If only they were stories about Michael Bolton, I think we would have a clear winner.

It wasn’t so much the fandom per se (original Star Trek) but the way in which I went about it when I was in junior high that was embarrassing. I was obsessed with Star Trek, and particularly with Spock. I bought every Star Trek novel published, watched every episode and recorded them on audiotape (this was right before VCRs came out, or at least before they were affordable), transcribed scripts from the audiotapes, drew pictures, wrote fanfic, and generally tried to relate Star Trek to every aspect of my life. Then, a little way in, I moved my obsession over to Mark Lenard (Sarek) and even joined his fan club for awhile. The day I received my fan-club pack (including an autographed picture!) I went into transports of ecstasy. This was the coolest thing ever! My friend (who I dragged into my obsession with me, despite the fact that she didn’t have a TV) was *so *jealous.

This was around the time when other teenagers were lusting after Leif Garrett, Shaun Cassidy, and Farrah Fawcett-Majors. Me, I had posters of Spock.

Yeah, I was a weird kid. I still like Star Trek, but…well…not *that *much.

I was a huge Doors fan when I was a teen. Now they just seem boring and pretentious.
