What was your wedding dress like?

Here’s mine - I didn’t want a strapless dress, but I fell in love with this one when I tried it on. (I was getting married when the strapless dress was at it’s height). It was flowy and pretty. So I went with a strapless dress.

This is mine:

Target Bridal baybeee for $159. I couldn’t stomach the thought of paying scads of money for a dress I’d wear once. I’m a cheapass like that, plus, I’m kind of not into dress-up and not very sentimental.

I don’t have a scan of the photos, but . . . Red, off the shoulder, full skirt, black beaded fringe across the bodice. $70. I called it “the Spanish whore look.” Red was my favorite color at the time, dammit! And I wasn’t going to wear some run-of-the-mill white thing. I wore it to a friend’s wedding exactly one year later.

Mr. S still wears the cotton pants he bought for our wedding. They don’t show any wear at all, though he’s been wearing them regularly for 18 years. I think that must be a sign or something.

Mine was a tea length dress with lace all over, and short lace sleeves with a sweetheart neckline. I bought it for $85 from a “Holiday Dress Catalog” from Lane Bryant. We were paying for our own wedding, and a sacrificed frills (I shoulda sacrificed the groom - c’est la vie.)

Sometimes I wish I had down the big dress thing - but in reality, next time, it’s all about the right groom. I wouldn’t mind doing something more themed - y’know, maiden in the woods kind of thing. I used to be in love with this dress by Sposabella back in the 80s. Course, back in the 80s I used to think Aquanet was a good thing . . .

I’d love to wear something like this or this. Or maybe even something like this, if I got married in the summer.

I loved my dress. It was raw silk in a slightly off-white color. It was off the shoulder with a drop waist. Accross the neckline were small silk flowers made from pastel ribbon. Not too many or too big.

We were married in a Botanical Garden, so I loved having the flowers.

She must have really loved you…

Mine was ages ago, but it was a Galina so it was light and comfortable. It had a full skirt with a train and the top was actually like a stretch lace t-shirt reimbroidered with pearls and beading. It was lovely, but I would choose something very different now.

I got married last month. The professional photos arn’t up yet but these will give you an idea of how the dress looked.

The top

full length

Mine was deep red velvet, floor length at the back, knee length at the front, fitted and quite low cut and buttoned up the front, with deep drooping sleeves. It was made for me, modelled on a coat dress I took to the dressmaker and I described my outfit as ‘all Guinevered up’. I wore it with heeled laced-up ankle boots and a heavy beaded black choker necklace woven into my hair instead of a veil/tiara etc. I have never felt so beautiful before or since: loved, loved, loved it.

I loooooooved my wedding dress. It was simple, with clean lines and red accents. It wasn’t expensive and it fit my personality perfectly. My god. I can’t emphasize enough how much I loved my dress. I saw it online and wanted it, but seriously doubted I would be able to wear it. Then I saw the same dress at the bridal store, and still seriously doubted I would be able to pull it off. Then someone brought it to me to wear. It took me all of 30 seconds to make up my mind.

The front, in motion.

The back.

I had a red crystal tiara and red-fringed veil to match, too. faints

I hope this works, it’s been a long time since I dredged it up: Mine

If you can’t see it, it’s a strapless floor-length dress with a gold band around the top. It laces up in the back with the same gold material, and has some little accents on the skirt with gold thread and rhinestones.

It cost about $180 from Macy’s and I bought it online without ever trying it on. It fit perfectly, and the shoes I bought to go with it were just the right height to let the hem skim the floor, although I wasn’t thinking of such things at the time. Considering my usual bad luck with clothes buying, it’s a minor miracle. I still have it and I’d wear it again if I ever had a reason to dress up that much.

My favorites so far are HazelNut’s second choice and Charley’s description, but I don’t think either of them would fit well into the “let’s just get it over with” type of wedding I was going for.

Hal, I love the hair.

My current favorite, though I haven’t even been asked any big question yet, is this gorgeous Anne Barge dress. I’m also loving another one by the same designer, but I’m not sure how it would look from the front. I’ve got some boobage, and miss model is pretty flat there. I’m also attracted to the shape of this dress.

Pepper Mill’s favorite hobby is looking at wedding dresses in store windows as we drive by and critiquing them. Most of the times the critique is :“YUCK!”
Pepper’s theory was that ornate, wedding-cake desses were a waste of time and money. A wedding gown should be tasteful and functional – you ought to be able to use it again.
She got married in a tea-length ecru dress. Which she used after that.

My thoughts too. Hah!

There is a market for photos that self-destruct after five years, and I am that category too.

Don’t worry Hal, you have aged most gracefully.

Your wife though… from the more recent photos, is still gorgeous.

I’ve never heard of this designer, but oooooooooh!

Pssssst. Spoken in past tense. They are way past tense. They are in Bungalows.

I blame Groucho for that one.

I saw a few things on there that I thought were really pretty, like this.

I haven’t made up my mind at all about what I want out of a wedding dress. I waver between poofy tea-length v-neck/halter dresses, Grecian goddess type stuff, the “mermaid” look, and really simple “bohemian” stuff. Truth is, I’m a little scared to find out what’s going to be acceptable looking on me and I’m not sure how far out our wedding is, as I haven’t talked with my mom about possibly moving up the wedding date. (Waiting on the second PET scan results after round #3 of chemo. We’re currently entering round #2.)

blush Thank you!

And I happen to think Hal was, and still is, a complete hottie!

My first wedding dress was a prom dress (for a prom I didn’t end up going to) but it was white.

My second wedding dress was - somewhat like the marriage - forgettable. I honestly don’t remember it - but it was 16 years ago.

My last wedding dress was a navy blue double breasted pinstripe suit. I wear it all the time.
