I heard on the radio a while back that the number one cause of death for women in the middle ages was childbirth, with fire being number 2 (due to cooking over an open fire). What were death rates for pregnant women giving birth in the middle ages, ancient civilization or pre-civilization? Were they high like 40% or really low like 5%?
