What were the OTHER great movies of 1939?

CalMeacham, you forgot Yor, the Hunter from the Future. A visit to IMDb jogged my memory and I had a vivid flashback of 90 minutes of the worst movie of all time (that my friends forced me to watch, so don’t go dissing me!)

And don’t anybody start arguing with me, this is the worst movie of all time. Fortunately, most of it has been erased from my memory.

Oh-oh, Arnie’s going to get us started on a Worst Movie thread. If so, I nominate: Under The Cherry Moon.

Eve,

You’ll get no arguments from me about 1932 (I always thought 1939 a bit overrated–plenty of “classics”, but mostly titles people know rather than all truly great movies).

However, I can’t believe you missed 4 of the 5 Best films from 1932:

Lubitsch’s Trouble in Paradise
Ozu’s I Was Born, but…
Dreyer’s Vampyr
Browning’s Freaks

(the 5th of course being Mamoulian’s wonderful Love Me Tonight)

Good choices, though. Some others include the Marx Brothers’ Horse Feathers, Sternberg’s Blonde Venus, Hawks’ Scarface, Fanny w/Raimu, Renoir’s Boudu Saved from Drowning, The Mummy, Ecstasy, The Most Dangerous Game, Tarzan the Ape Man, White Zombie, Capra’s American Madness, and two seminal animated shorts: Flowers and Trees and Minnie the Moocher w/Betty Boop

Well, Arch, I didn’t want to cause old-movie overload . . . But I think we have conclusively proved that 1932 was the high point in movie history, anmd it’s all been downhill since then.
