what were they thinking when they made The Lost World

the book is a lot better than the movie

Do you think that this is the first time that a book was better than the movie?

And just for clarity’s sake, which movie version of *The Lost World *are you talking about?

Michael Crichton The Lost World

Jurassic Park the novel is better than the movie I suppose, but the movie is great

The Lost World the novel is great and the movie was a disaster. They changed too much

The Lost World is in no way a great novel.

I can’t compare it to the movie, as I haven’t seen the latter, but the book was wretched.

I’m pretty sure they were thinking, “This franchise is going to make us a shitload of money.”

They were thinking "Everybody really loves that Jeff Goldblum fellow with his insightful advice on Chaos Theory. And precocious kids, audiences just lap them up. Lets fill the film with both of them.

And somewhere in there we might have dinosaurs eating people, but we’ll move the emphasis away from that as much as possible."

Meanwhile Spielberg does his usual “I’ve always wanted to work with…” casting decisions. Hence Pete Postlethwaite and Julianne Moore jammed in awkwardly.

in the novel there were two kids but they got merged into one in the movie. why would they do that if audience love kids

I’ll tell you what they were thinking - they were thinking “man, we need to get one of those scary T-Rex’s from the first movie to come to the United States, so we can release it in downtown LA. We can even make dumb Godzilla jokes! Who cares if it wasn’t in the book, it will be the scene everybody’ll be talking about this summer!!!”

IMO, Jurassic Park 3 (which was not based on a novel at all) was the best of the trilogy. Think 4 will ever come out of development hell?

1 and 3 were good, but I hate genius kids. The first JP had 2 Wesley Crushers, 3 only had one. 4 better not have any.

the t-rex isn’t in LA

it is in San Diego

but everyone I talk to says it is in LA

why does everyone think it is LA

I love Spielberg, and I love almost every movie he made - and yet, I absolutely *loathe *JP2. I have no idea what he was thinking when he made it. Maybe he just wanted to make one film where the bad guys won.

Plus it features The World’s Stupidest Paleontologist (TWSP), who does things like bitch about non-interference only to pet the cute widdle baby dinos, and who gets baby dino blood on her without, seemingly, showing any concern that maybe Big Momma Dino (who was trying to be baited with said injured lil’ dino) might smell that.

And as a result, she got the Richard Schiff character killed - and felt absolutely no guilt or remorse.

As far as I’m concerned, the only likeable and sympathetic character in the movie was Pete Postlethwaite’s big game hunter. I wanted the film to be about him.

I see it like this…

JP = Dumb plot, annoying characters, but hey, Dinosaurs!
LW=Dumb plot, annoying characters, plus loads more Dinosaurs

So, on a dinosaurs per minute rating, I quite like it.

It was just a terrible movie, full of this type of character. One of those movies where everyone in it does exactly the opposite of what any reasonably intelligent person would do at every possible opportunity. Don’t even get me started on Jurassic Park III

I read the orignial JP, and loved it. Went eagerly to see the movie, and it wasn’t terrible. The special effects, at the time, were unprecedented. The story stayed more or less true to the book.

When JPII (the book) came out, I read it. It was horrible, and read exactly like Crichton was only putting it out so that they could make it into a movie. It was full of chiched characters, stupid people, ham-fisted villians, etc. Then the movie did what it could to be even worse (I think I only watched the first 40 minutes of the movie).

I didn’t see JPIII. Maybe I should give it a chance but I’d rather not take the gamble.

BTW didn’t Crichton write that other book about the folks who get sent back in time into medieval France and end up fighting in some battle with the English? That book was a godawful mess. I actively avoided the movie.

Timeline. You made good decision.

See, I think The Lost World movie is better than the book.

I also think it’s a terrible movie.

Conan Doyle’s Lost World was a great book, and the first two movies made of it were pretty good, even if the 1960 version is the classic “lizards with glued-on horns and frills” movie.

I rather enjoyed the book. But the movie was one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life.

When the little girl beat up the raptor by doing gymnastics, I knew it was in the running worst.
