I picture the ship of fools sitting around a table. “Can anyone think of anything? Anything? Something safe, a sure bet? Anyone?” …crickets…someone speaks up…“I remember when I was about 15 and I saw a movie and I liked it and it’s shown over and over on Bravo on TV now…”
“OK, brilliant, that’s IT! It needs a remake!”
SOMETIMES, even movies that weren’t huge hits at the box office have spawned sequels if they eventually made a lot of money through video rentals.
Austin Powers wasn’t a particularly big hit at theaters. Oh, it had a fairly low budget so it turned a profit, but it would never have had a sequel if box office returns alone made all the difference.
However, it was so successful on video that it led to TWO sequels, both of which raked in $300,000,000 at the theaters.
Avatar: the last Airbender was supposed to have sequels but I guess didn’t do well enough or people couldn’t bear the thought of M. Night Shamalan making more films.
