What will replace aircraft when the petrol/oil runs out?

OK, no need to be rude about it. I just wanted to know why you brought it up, as I am interested in the topic. Never mind.

A dear friend of mine who is a bit of a genius in Industrial Chemistry was based in Naples during the mid 90’s and came very close to getting a Nobel prize I’m told.

His breaktrhough? He discovered the processes used by certain barnicles in the Bay of Naples which had the ability to convert ferrous rust particles on the hulls of ships into organic biodegradeable waste after the barnicles had done their thing. Apparently it was pretty cutting edge research and my freind was very highly regarded.

Anyways, my point here is this… at the end of the day, iso-octane is a branched hydrocarbon molecule not a long single strand hydrocarbon molecule. So it’s a high-yield version of hydrocarbons which cope with high compression very nicely. After having chatted with my friend a number of times about his Naples research, he assures me that the next 15 years will prove to be a real watershed as scientists tweak certain bacteria to produce wastes which human society will find extremely valuable.

But you know, as ironic as it sounds, if you take the premise of the original Matrix (before the sequels came out and the plot went down the sewer) you had this premise where human beings were stored in giant farms to provide heat energy to all the machines of this world. Oddly enough, if we humans were to start creating huge bacteria farms which were designed to produce hydrocarbon strands we’d actually be fulfilling the Matrix concept - albeit where the roles are switched around a bit.

In this context, who amongst all the bacteria, would prove to be “The One?”.
