Without posting words that would identify sensitive info about you IRL, such as name, occupation, employer, etc., what words have you added to spellcheck?

I added Australian spellings of all the American words until I realised I could just change the dictionary.

In my defense, I was 10 at the time.

None! Spell check is evil. It causes you to spell worse, because it can’t understand context.
I use a dictionary. A big hard-cover one. That’s old, no new fangled words for me. It doesn’t even have a .com on it.

sorry, carry on…

Reintarnation: Yosmite Sam reiterating his tirade against the long-eared galoot?

Coming back to life as a hillbilly.

A lot of my custom words are people’s names, but I’ve left those out of the following list:

afield, artifacts, blog, Cabrini, Chipotle, COIs, CollabNet, demining, DoC, DoD, enterprise, eXtensible, IRs, maXML, Net-Centric, NetOps, offeror, OpenOffice, phishing, quoter, RDBMS’s, ReqPro, RequisitePro, RequisiteWeb, ReqWeb, SoDa, TestTrack, TOs, University

This is from here at work … I’m curious now about what custom words I have at home!

I both agree and disagree: I agree that people shouldn’t rely solely on spellcheck, but I disagree that it is evil or makes you spell worse.

I turn off the “check spelling as you type” and “check grammar as you type” options as soon as I get a new version of MS Word. My spelling is pretty good on its own, so if I need help as I write I use an online dictionary. But at the end, when I think I’m done, I always run at least one spelling & grammar check. I wind up ignoring a lot of the suggestions, but sometimes it does catch stuff that I’ve missed. Also, when I’ve been handed someone else’s document to proofread/edit, the first thing I do is run a spelling & grammar check on it.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that spellcheck is good if kept in its place. If you don’t automatically accept or reject its suggestions, and don’t use it in lieu of actually proofreading your work (or in lieu of an editor), it can be quite the handy little tool.

(Found the text file in: Documents and Setting /Owner /Application Data /Microsoft /Proof. “Application Data” is a hidden folder.)

Mine is not nearly as interesting, as it’s all work related:

birthdate, Centera, CrystalReports, failsafes, filmless, MTBF, multiframe, pdf, petabyte, RFI, RFPs, RIS, sunsetted, Transcriptionist, teleradiology, transcriptionists, worklist, worklists

Ok, I want to know how the Google ad for this thread wound up as:

I had to add Earnhardt to my spellcheck list because that stupid paperclip isn’t a NASCAR fan.

Yeah, but of all the words, in all the posts…

Achilleus, Fagles, Hektor, Telemachus, Iphygenia, Clytemnestra, Nicomachean, Timeaus, Euripides, Sachs, Grube, Herodotus, arete, Sophocles, Crito, Meno, Agamemnon, Menelaus, Odysseus, Antigone, Iphigeneia, Charbadis, spork, sporker.

I’m not entirely certain where the last two came from, but I’m fairly certain that they were not added from the same paper as any of the others.

Well, I had to add my last name …

monophthong, monophthongization

Brobdingnagian

…it had to come into mine…

The name of the town I used to live in, because it kept getting flagged, and the option I was given was “removal”.

I mostly use auto-correct for words I know I’m going to typo wrong. I spell well, but I type like a donkey wearing mittens, so auto-correct has all my most common mistakes in it.

OK, so how do I find this in Word?

(In reply to the OP, lots of place names and Arabic stuff.)

Mostly work related, names, brands, etc.

Here are a few of the more generic adds:
Alisos

Excellent question, where do you find this?
