What Worthy Females Does Steve Miller Think Are Unfairly Out of Rock Hall of Fame?

Rush.

Geddy Lee is a man. I think.

Ruth Brown.

The outrage over Rush not being in the RRHOF transcends sexuality.

So far, I’m seeing a lot of perfectly okay Hall of Fame selections, but no slam dunks.

I’d be absolutely FINE with, say, Pat Benatar or the Go-Gos being elected; they’re at least as worthy as numerous acts already inducted. But their exclusion doesn’t offend or outrage me. They’re the musical equivalent of Gil Hodges or Jack Morris. I wouldn’t be horrified if either man got into the Baseball Hall of Fame (there are definitely worse players already in the Hall), but I’m not screaming in outrage, “How can you keep them out???”

Now, I know that Steve Miller is a blues aficionado, and MAYBE he’s thinking of some old-time female blues singers who would be worthy inductees as early influences on rock music.

Perhaps the best female selection I can think of is Ella Fitzgerald, who made numerous records that sure sound like “rock and roll” years before anyone had ever heard of Elvis.

I was thinking of suggesting Ella, as there is no better singer, and if Billie Holiday is on the list so the precedent is there. From a Rock and Roll standpoint I think Annie Lennox is more deserving at the current time, but I wouldn’t object to either.

In the next 10 years I think you’ll see a bunch of female musicians from the 80’s and 90’s inducted. The musicians from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s may simply not be well enough known to the general public.

Sorry, but artists like Ruth Brown, Memphis Minnie, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe are essential to the development of rock n’ roll.

Slam dunks, all of 'em.

Seriously, how is Cher not in? She’s had like a 50-year career and umpteen hits (solo and with Sonny) including a number one Billboard single in every decade from the 1960s to the 2010s. If Cher’s not in then something is seriously awry with their criteria.

I mean, I’m not even that big a Cher fan but WTF?

This. Completely.

Of course…they’re IN the hall.

I totally agree. But again, I think the best thing we can do with it at this point is probably let it burn down, fall over and sink into the swamp, then we can build a new one.

The late, transcendant Sandy Denny, together with the rest of Fairport Convention, really REALLY should be in there.

The outrage transcends TIME as well as GENDER!

In Cleveland, you dump it in the swamp, and THEN you burn it down.

(Sorry, couldn’t resist. I love Cleveland – I really do.)

Then Maddy Prior and the rest of Steeleye Span wouldn’t be far behind.
