Why?
“What would a Cheney Presidency be like?”
It’d be like our current one, without the thin veneer of “charm” George brings to the table.
What a scary thought! Actually, I’d put it another way: Cheney was place an even higher priority on dismantling environmental regulations than Bush has.
My guess is that Cheney has largely been controlling the Bush Administration’s environmental policies, which is indeed a good part of the reason why they are so atrocious.
I’ll make sure to bookmark this thread for when Cheney is elected President in four years, see how the prediction go. Medical science can do wonders and the Bush team’s job won’t be done by the end of GBII. Jeb for VP, he’ll deliver Florida.
One is pleased to jest, of course?
Haliburton would certainly do real well.
Yes. His heart condition would kill him in a week.
He shouldn’t even be VP, IMHO.
I suspect Cheney’s approval rating would fall (following the initial upward sympathy blip, depending on the nature of his ascension). Note that Cheney tends to stay below the radar (to the point where the press have on some occasions wondered what happened to him). He’s too acerbic for a front-line public role.
This might be mitigated somewhat by appointing a suitably popular VP. Condoleeza Rice might be a bold choice; while she’s not the best at off-the-cuff speaking, merely having a black woman as VP would be sufficient to draw attention away from the President for a while.
Policy-wise, I don’t see a huge difference in substance, but perhaps a more direct, hard-sell approach to putting them forward.
And, on the tangent already drawn, I don’t see Cheney running for President in 2008 – he’s relatively old, and his health is already precarious. I predict he’ll go back to Halliburton and his other board jobs to reap the financial rewards of his work in the current administration, and Jeb will run for President.
Since when can Presidents retrocatively veto legislation?
I agree that a Cheney presidency would be pretty much the same as a Bush presidency. They just don’t seem to disagree on much.
Yeah I was kidding BrainGlutton, didn’t include a smiley because it was more a “boo” type joke than “ha ha”. Cheney seems to seriously not want to try for his own run which leads to the big question: who ARE the Republicans going to run. I’m sure Cheney will have a big say in it. Kind of a drag for them that they need a completely new slate. Someone who has a clue about the Republican back halls of power should start a thread.
He had the same condition in 2000, didn’t he? I often wonder why he is VP. What were they thinking?
Jeb has publicly announced he won’t run in 2008. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=173616&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312 Maybe Giuliani or Pataki would go for it.
Thinking…iiiiiisn’t this Administration’s strong point.
…30 minutes later and I’m still chuckling over this post…
I’ll believe it when I don’t see it. If he doesn’t go in 2008 he needs to pray for a democratic win or wait until 2016 because if the Republican nominee takes the prize Jeb won’t get a chance to run in 2012.
I figure these guys (at a minimum) will throw their hats into the ring:
Guiliani
McCain (age be damned)
Frist
Racicot might make a try. Gingrich says he might but I think he’s just trying to sell some books.
Frist is iffy.
He’s one of my Senators ( :smack: ) and he has personal troubles.
His wife’s very ill, last I heard, & he’s making noises like he might want out of the Great Game altogether.
As rumored here in Dogpatch, that is.
And your other would be Jack S. Phogbound?
Well, the pic don’t look like Frist, but it surely do sound like Frist!
What would a Cheney Presidency be like?
I think it would be like what the man said about a bombing run: long stretches of boredom punctuated by moments of stark terror.
