So far as I’m concerned, that’s still an argument that work-sponsored outings are a bad idea.
What would happen if a tourist (or worse) got disrespectful at the Tomb of the Unknowns (Arlington)?
Nobody suppressed her right to free speech, but it pissed off a number of people who are using their right to free speech.
It’s a prank that backfired. Even if it weren’t a prank, civil disobedience is a time-honored right in this country. The right to express oneself, however douchey it may be, is a cornerstone of our Constitution. The last ten years of worship for the military has been, for me, somewhat less than heart-warming. In light of that, I had to smile at the cheekiness of the photo.
Look at the readers’ comments on the linked facebook page. One of them says “freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences.”
She is free to be a douche in front of millions of people. And millions of people are free to criticize her.
But public criticism can be fatal for her employer–which is a charitible organization that gets its funding from donations, and therfore is very, very concerned about its public image..
This wasn’t a teenage prank–she is a 30 year old woman, who should be responsible enough to know that actions have consequences. Acting rudely and embarrrassing your employer while you are getting paid on company time? Not smart.
I didn’t say she was a smart douche. Publishing it on FB was not the act of a thinking, working adult. I wonder why it is that people who have grown up with the Internet, and knowing that everything you publish on it lives on forever, still insist on publishing every stupid or criminal act they can manage to come up with. Her employer would be right to demand that she apologize, and to reprimand her. But firing seems rather drastic.
Possibly, but working in a non-profit that relies on contributions from the general public may require certain responses in this day and age. What is drastic in one set of circumstances may be prudent in others.
He/she will be buried in a fifth tomb.

Since this is an old thread, and the post that revived it hasn’t contributed any new factual information on the question, I’m going to close it.
