What would happen if the majority of voters did a write-in candidate for president?

?

Keep the answer in small, coherent sentances for those of us who barely grasp politico talk.

Thank you.

Lots of outrage when they discovered that their votes meant nothing.

Many states, though not all, will only count write-in votes for president if the candidate has qualified for the ballot and named a full slate of electors. Lacking qualifications, the votes will not be counted.

Beyond that, it would be a question of how the votes were scattered around the country.

Even given the absurd scenario of a majority of write-in votes, all for the same candidate, in every state, the lack of standing would mean that the regular candidates would still win a number of states.

Who would get the most electoral votes? Who could say? Perhaps nobody would get enough and the race would go to the House of Representatives and the states would go by party-line ballot and make the whole thing moot.

A beautiful what if, destroyed by an ugly fact.
